A long wait
When Charles Leclerc first took the wheel of a Ferrari, he hoped to have a car capable of fighting for the Formula 1 title. In the early races of 2019, the Monegasque driver gave the impression that he could compete at the top, but after five and a half years, it’s a fact that he has never been in contention for the championship until the end of the season.
His best year was 2022, with the great illusion brought by the new regulations that seemed to have made the F1-75 the benchmark on the grid: the Monegasque driver started the season in an amazing way, with two race victories in the first three rounds, at the Bahrain International Circuit and the Albert Park circuit in Australia, but unfortunately things went downhill and Charles Leclerc was not able to mount a real challenge against Max Verstappen. The strong comeback by the Dutchman and his Red Bull team then handed the title to the them with four races to spare.
Charles Leclerc’s hope
Since he began his racing career, Charles Leclerc set his sights on four key achievements: breaking into Formula 1, driving for Ferrari, winning the Monaco Grand Prix, and becoming world champion. Three of these milestones are already behind him, but the ultimate goal—claiming the world championship—remains a challenge still to be conquered.
In a long interview with Gentleman’s Journal, Charles Leclerc analyzed his approach to racing: “I still have moments where I feel guilty. When there are 2 or 3 races in a row that go badly, you can end up hating everything. And in those moments, I always try to remind myself how lucky I am to do what I do. My goal is to become world champion with Ferrari. And I want to do it only with Ferrari, and I’m focused on that.” – the Monegasque driver pointed out.
He also commented on Ferrari’s current situation: “For now, we’re not yet where we want to be in terms of performance, but we’re working hard. I’m confident that the future is bright. But certainly, with the situation we’re in at the moment, I wish we had a winning car,” Charles Leclerc admitted.
