During the night of the 2026 Academy Awards, the film F1 returned home with only one statuette despite receiving four nominations.
Formula 1 did not fully conquer the 2026 Oscars: during the prestigious awards ceremony that traditionally closes the cinematic season, the movie F1 managed to secure just one Oscar. The film directed by Joseph Kosinski had been nominated in four different categories: Best Sound, Best Film Editing, Best Visual Effects, and Best Picture.
In the end, F1 managed to triumph only in the Best Sound category, where it was competing against Frankenstein, Sirāt, Sinners, and One Battle After Another. In addition to the Oscar win, the Apple-produced movie was also recognized as one of the 10 best films of 2025 by the National Board of Review.
The film also enjoyed success during the awards season, winning two Critics’ Choice Awards for Best Editing and Best Sound. It also claimed the Best Sound prize at the 2026 BAFTA Film Awards, along with several other industry recognitions.
Another historic victory for Apple and Formula 1
This year’s Oscar victory follows Apple’s historic achievements in recent years. Back in 2022, the company made history with CODA, which became the first film with a predominantly deaf cast to win the award for Best Picture. It was also the first movie produced by a streaming platform to ever win the Academy Award for Best Picture.
On the stage of the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, representatives of the film’s sound production team — Gareth John, Al Nelson, Gwendolyn Yates Whittle, Gary A. Rizzo, and Juan Peralta — stepped up to receive the statuette. The Academy recognized the remarkable work behind the realistic representation of Formula 1 cars on track.
Critics widely praised the sound design of the F1 movie, describing it as an immersive experience capable of capturing the essence of high-speed racing. Much of the recording work was carried out trackside, with carefully engineered audio processing designed to recreate the distinctive and unmistakable sound of Formula 1 cars.
