Toto Wolff, the Mercedes Team Principal, has revealed an interesting behind-the-scenes insight into his relationship with Lewis Hamilton, the seven-time Formula 1 World Champion, and how their connection has evolved since the Briton unexpected move to Scuderia Ferrari.
Despite what many perceived as a “betrayal” when Lewis Hamilton decided to leave Mercedes at the end of the 2023 season to join Ferrari starting in 2024, there are no lingering regrets between the two. In fact, the relationship between Toto Wolff and Lewis Hamilton has returned to a much more peaceful and amicable state.
As the saying goes, it’s all water under the bridge, judging by the way the team principal and former driver now meet openly to discuss a wide range of topics without tension. For over a decade, Lewis Hamilton and the Mercedes Formula 1 team formed an incredibly successful partnership. Together, they created a dominant era in the sport, securing six World Drivers’ Championships and eight consecutive Constructors’ Championships, an extraordinary record of success in Formula 1 history.
Then, on February 1, 2024, everything changed. The seven-time world champion publicly announced his move to Ferrari, ending his era with Mercedes and starting a new chapter in his illustrious racing career.
More than a year has now passed since that announcement, and Toto Wolff disclosed that their relationship is much calmer and friendlier than many would have expected. “When Lewis decided to leave, the situation could have become very awkward and even hostile, but we actively discussed how to avoid that,” Wolff explained during a detailed interview with the Wall Street Journal.
“We all made a strong effort to be very accommodating and understanding. Lewis remained a friend. He still visits the office on weekends! He talks with the engineers, has something to eat. After many Grands Prix, he even travels with me. So we have the old gang reunited: Valtteri Bottas, George Russell, Lewis Hamilton, and me flying to the races together.”
Although Toto Wolff is no longer Lewis Hamilton’s boss, the British driver still turns to him for advice—sometimes on very personal matters. Wolff shared an unusual anecdote about their conversations: “I live a different life through his eyes, you know. He shows me his flirtations and the girls he’s dating, and asks me, ‘Should I try with this girl or not?’ And I reply, ‘Yes, you should, and then tell me how it went!’”
On the professional front, Lewis Hamilton is still chasing his first podium finish with Ferrari. His recent weekend in China, where he secured pole position and won the Sprint Race, was promising but ultimately not enough to satisfy the #44 driver, who clearly wants much more success. This week, Formula 1 returns to the track at the Belgian Grand Prix in Spa-Francorchamps. Could this be the breakthrough moment Lewis Hamilton has been waiting for with Scuderia Ferrari?
