Bahrain testing update: Ferrari SF-26 faces setbacks despite new updates. Ferrari struggles on Day 2 of Bahrain testing: SF-26 hindered by technical issues.

Lewis Hamilton, SF26, 2026 F1

Ferrari experienced a particularly challenging second day of pre-season Formula 1 testing at the Bahrain International Circuit, with technical issues and a complicated push lap significantly limiting progress and disrupting the planned program. The day concluded with the Ferrari SF-26 showing a slight step back, despite the new technical updates and upgrades that had been introduced to the car.

The usual daily recap highlights that it was only Lewis Hamilton who was at the wheel of the Ferrari SF-26 on the second day of testing, completing fewer laps compared to the more productive sessions of the previous days. For the final segment of testing in Sakhir, the responsibility for the car’s final validation passes to Charles Leclerc, who takes over to ensure all elements of the vehicle were properly assessed under track conditions.

After surprising observers on Wednesday with an entirely new solution in the exhaust area, Ferrari’s technical team introduced a highly-discussed rear wing on Thursday morning. The rear wing solution generated considerable conversation within the paddock due to its unusual design and potential aerodynamic implications. However, the rear wing was only used in the early hours of the session, covering a mere five laps, which represented a very modest tally for the first four hours of the day. The remainder of the session saw the SF-26 largely confined to the garage due to an unexpected chassis issue, which prevented the car from running consistently.

Although the situation did not require immediate alarm, the second day of testing in Bahrain turned out to be the most complex and technically demanding day of Ferrari’s entire pre-season program since the SF-26 first appeared on track at Fiorano. The combination of technical verifications, detailed aerodynamic assessments, and setup optimization work was heavily impacted by the unforeseen chassis-related problem that arose during the first part of the morning session.

Seven-time Formula 1 World Champion Lewis Hamilton began the day by operating the SF-26 on Medium C3 tires, focusing on a series of comparative tests designed to evaluate the newly introduced aerodynamic solutions. According to Ferrari Team Principal Fred Vasseur, who spoke about the updates in a press briefing, the aerodynamic package being tested might not even be used for the opening race in Australia, suggesting that some elements of the testing were experimental or possibly even strategic in nature.

The primary objective for Lewis Hamilton was to gather cross-referenced data on various configurations of load distribution and aerodynamic balance. Unfortunately, the technical problem that forced the SF-26 into a prolonged stop in the garage heavily disrupted the day’s program and limited the number of laps that could be completed. Repairing the anomaly required both significant time and careful coordination among Ferrari’s mechanics and engineers, which compressed the original schedule and made it more difficult to complete the full range of planned tests and simulations.

Once the chassis issue had been resolved, Lewis Hamilton returned to the track before the lunch break. During this period, he also carried out a start simulation from the grid, which was intended to validate Ferrari’s operational procedures in preparation for the season opener. In this area, the results were much more encouraging. Thanks to a more compact and highly responsive turbo, Ferrari’s cars continued to demonstrate excellent performance in standing starts, accelerating rapidly off the line. This was a particularly positive indicator for the Scuderia as they prepared for the competitive demands of the new Formula 1 season.

During the afternoon, the focus of testing shifted to a more methodical and structured program. The Maranello team began once again with Medium C3 tires, concentrating on tire behavior and consistency in pace. Subsequently, they transitioned to the harder tire compounds, C2 and C1, to simulate long-run scenarios and evaluate how the car’s balance and performance evolved as the track rubbered in and temperatures gradually dropped. The analysis during this session focused heavily on the evolution of aerodynamic balance, as well as the careful management of tire degradation over multiple laps. The changing track conditions required constant adjustments to the car’s setup to maintain stability and performance. Just over an hour before the conclusion of the session, Ferrari’s mechanics worked meticulously on the front and rear torsion bars in order to recalibrate the SF-26’s setup and ensure the car maintained optimal balance for the final runs of the day.

Towards the end of the session, Lewis Hamilton recorded his best lap time of 1.33.408 on a set of fresh C3 tires. The British driver acknowledged that the day had not gone perfectly, noting that Ferrari was unable to complete the entire pre-planned program due to the combination of technical issues and limited running time. Nevertheless, he emphasized the exceptional response from the team in the garage, explaining that all the mechanics and engineers had worked efficiently and professionally to repair the car and allow him to return to the track. The Briton stressed that the laps that were completed and the data that were gathered during the day would be crucial in helping Ferrari continue its preparation for the 2026 Formula 1 season.

In terms of outright lap times, the picture was less clear. During his push lap, Lewis Hamilton faced several difficulties, having to attempt the effort three separate times without producing a fully clean reference lap. The Ferrari driver finished six-tenths of a second behind Andrea Kimi Antonelli, who had set the fastest overall lap across the three days of testing.

It is also important to note that, consistent with the current focus of Formula 1 teams on mapping engines and gearboxes in line with the new regulations governing electric power deployment, Lewis Hamilton did not use eighth gear during his push attempts. This deliberate strategy is designed to maintain higher engine revs, which allows the car’s electric motor generator unit to recharge more efficiently and maintain consistent hybrid performance during critical laps.

For Ferrari, the second day of testing in Bahrain was undoubtedly the most difficult of the entire pre-season session. Between the unexpected technical setbacks and the fact that single-lap performance did not provide a fully clear picture of the SF-26’s potential, the team faced significant challenges in gathering useful data. Despite the difficulties, the Ferrari engineers and mechanics demonstrated strong teamwork and technical competence in addressing the issues that arose, allowing Lewis Hamilton to extract as much valuable information as possible from the limited running time available.

Looking ahead, Charles Leclerc is set to take over driving duties on the SF-26 for the third day of testing. He will drive both in the morning and afternoon sessions, providing Ferrari with a final opportunity to validate the car’s setup and gather additional data in preparation for the season-opening Grand Prix in Australia. The work carried out by both Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc during this pre-season testing period is expected to be instrumental in shaping Ferrari’s strategy, car development, and overall competitiveness for the upcoming Formula 1 season.

Overall, while Ferrari introduced promising updates to the SF-26, including the new rear wing and aerodynamic refinements, Day 2 highlighted that further development and optimization remain necessary. The technical difficulties and challenges encountered have provided valuable lessons for the team as they work to ensure the SF-26 is competitive from the first race of the season. The combination of limited laps, the complex push lap, and the recovery work in the garage underscores the demanding nature of pre-season testing in modern Formula 1 and the importance of careful coordination between drivers, engineers, and mechanics.

Day 2 at Bahrain therefore demonstrated both the potential and the limitations of Ferrari’s current car package. Lewis Hamilton’s efforts, despite being curtailed by technical setbacks, offered meaningful insights into tire behavior, aerodynamic performance, and starting procedure efficiency. As Charles Leclerc prepares to take over the SF-26, Ferrari will look to consolidate the data collected over the first two days and address the challenges observed, with the aim of entering the first race of the season in a strong and competitive position.
