The last three days of Formula 1 pre-season testing in Bahrain clearly showed that the 2026 F1 season coming to Melbourne will be profoundly different. New technical balances, reshuffled hierarchies, and a paddock that has already identified early winners and losers of this revolution have emerged. Ferrari and Mercedes appear ready to set the pace, while Aston Martin faces an unexpected crisis that threatens the entire project.
Ferrari and Mercedes at the front: test results speak for themselves
From long runs to single-lap pace, the overall picture is remarkably consistent: Ferrari and Mercedes appear to be the most solid teams heading into the 2026 season. Charles Leclerc completed the Bahrain tests with a lap time clearly faster than anyone else, while Kimi Antonelli impressed during race simulations.
It was observed that Charles Leclerc of Ferrari finished the tests with the fastest lap, 0.811 seconds quicker than the second-best time, which was set by Kimi Antonelli of Mercedes.
Andrea Stella of McLaren highlighted that the tests confirmed Ferrari and Mercedes as the teams to beat, while McLaren and Red Bull are likely very similar to each other, with Ferrari and Mercedes clearly a step ahead.
Race simulations reinforced this impression. Charles Leclerc, Max Verstappen, and Oscar Piastri were very close in performance. Mercedes demonstrated strong potential from the first week of testing, showing consistency both in single-lap speed and race pace.
Aston Martin in crisis: Honda-Newey project struggles
While the top of the field appears defined, the bottom has a story that dominates conversations: Aston Martin’s struggles. The new partnership with Honda, combined with the arrival of Adrian Newey, has not delivered the expected results. Technical issues have overwhelmed the team.
Sources confirmed that Aston Martin is widely seen as the biggest disappointment of these Bahrain tests. Their new car is described as uncompetitive and difficult to drive, while the Honda power unit has been underpowered and unreliable. Aston Martin completed the fewest laps of any team during the testing sessions.
Adrian Newey reportedly stated that the Honda engine could not recover energy even at the lower limit of 250 kW. The situation was so critical that, at the start of the final day of testing, Honda had only a single battery available, forcing the team to run extremely limited programs and very short sessions.
Fernando Alonso expressed a sense of déjà-vu but remained cautiously optimistic. He suggested that publicly he maintains optimism and believes that, in the short to medium term, there is nothing that cannot be resolved.
The new F1 landscape ahead of Melbourne
The 2026 Formula 1 season is shaping up to be a complex mosaic. Ferrari and Mercedes are at the top, McLaren and Red Bull are close behind, Alpine is a positive surprise, and Williams faces potential setbacks. However, Aston Martin remains the most striking case, hit by technical problems that call the entire Honda-Newey project into question.
As the 2026 season begins, it promises excitement, uncertainties, and an evolving balance that could change rapidly. One thing is already clear: this new era has begun, and no team can afford to fall behind.
