The Bahrain pre-season Formula 1 tests did not go entirely according to plan for Kimi Antonelli, whose running was cut short after a technical issue affected his Mercedes W17. Over the course of six days in Sakhir, the young Italian missed approximately nine hours of track time due to reliability concerns. While Mercedes demonstrated strong pace at times, the team also encountered setbacks, with paddock rumors suggesting that a new power unit was fitted for the final two days of testing.
Despite the disruption, Antonelli remained optimistic about both his team and the progress made during the Bahrain F1 test sessions. “It hasn’t been an easy test for me here,” the Italian driver told media representatives in Bahrain. “It’s really important to solve problems quickly and deal with them properly so that we are ready for the rest of the season. The team analyzed the situation, identified the issue, and also found a solution. So hopefully we will be in good shape for Australia.”
Confidence in the Mercedes package
Although the reliability concerns limited his track time, Kimi Antonelli shared positive feedback about the overall balance and handling of the Mercedes W17. “The car has given good sensations,” he explained. “To be honest, we worked a lot on set-up, and the car is responding well. And of course, the other top teams also seem to be in good form.”
For Mercedes, maximizing mileage during pre-season testing is crucial under the 2026 Formula 1 regulations, where fine-tuning aerodynamic balance and understanding tire behavior can make a decisive difference. Antonelli’s remarks suggest that, despite the setbacks, the underlying performance of the W17 could provide a solid platform heading into the Australian Grand Prix.
Ferrari, McLaren and Red Bull in strong shape
When discussing the competitive landscape emerging from the Bahrain test, Antonelli openly acknowledged the strength of rival teams. “Ferrari looked very strong this morning, just like McLaren did yesterday, and also Red Bull,” he noted. “I think the top four teams are quite close, and it’s going to be a tight fight. There are a lot of expectations around us, but I think the other top teams are very strong as well.”
His comments reinforce the sense that the 2026 Formula 1 season could begin with an extremely close battle at the front. Ferrari’s pace, McLaren’s consistency, and Red Bull’s established competitiveness all point to a tightly contested championship, with Mercedes aiming to position itself firmly in that leading group.
A more prepared Antonelli for year two
For Antonelli, this will mark his second season in Formula 1. After a promising rookie campaign that included solid performances but also inevitable learning moments, the Italian driver feels better equipped for the challenges ahead. “I feel very good ahead of the start of the season. Much more prepared compared to last year,” he said.
Looking ahead to the season opener in Melbourne, Antonelli emphasized the importance of focus and execution. “I think we just need to keep focusing on ourselves and try to extract the maximum from our performance. Melbourne is just around the corner, and that will be the moment to really show our performance.”
As Formula 1 teams finalize preparations after the Bahrain pre-season test, Kimi Antonelli’s balanced outlook reflects both realism and ambition. While Mercedes must address its reliability concerns, the underlying pace and the close competition among Ferrari, McLaren, Red Bull, and Mercedes promise an exciting start to the 2026 F1 season.
