After Maffei, more changes on the horizon
The recent departure of Greg Maffei, who announced his resignation as President and CEO of Liberty Media, the company that controls Formula 1, might be the first step in a broader managerial shake-up within the sport, potentially linked to Liberty Media’s acquisition of MotoGP. Last April, the American company confirmed its future acquisition of approximately 86% of Dorna, while Dorna’s current management will retain about 14% of the company’s shares. Once the deal receives approval from the European Commission, it will be finalized.
In a complex interplay of power and sports politics, these changes could have another unexpected beneficiary: Andretti Global, a team that has long sought entry into Formula 1 as the 11th team, but has been blocked by the ten current teams and F1’s CEO, Stefano Domenicali. However, Donald Trump’s recent election to the White House, given his friendship and mutual respect with Mario Andretti, could shift the dynamics. Dutch journalist Jack Plooij outlined a possible scenario on Ziggo Sport’s Race Café.
The Andretti-Trump Connection and Domenicali’s Role
According to Plooij, Stefano Domenicali—one of the main obstacles to Andretti’s entry into F1, despite receiving FIA approval—might step down from his role. The Italian manager, who has undoubtedly contributed significantly to the sport’s remarkable growth in popularity and success in recent years, could take on the position of CEO of MotoGP.
This change in leadership could ease Andretti’s path into F1. Despite repeated setbacks in recent months, the Andretti family, alongside Cadillac, continues working toward their debut in motorsport’s premier category. Donald Trump’s potential pressure on Liberty Media could certainly benefit the family, a symbol of American motorsport.
However, sources close to Formula 1 have dismissed as “nonsense” the rumors about Stefano Domenicali’s future that have surfaced in recent hours.
