Charles Leclerc and Ferrari have officially extended their partnership, further strengthening a relationship that has become one of the defining stories of modern Formula 1. While the Monegasque driver was not approaching the end of his previous contract, the timing of the announcement ahead of the Monaco Grand Prix sends a powerful message about the mutual trust between driver and team.
Regardless of what future results may bring, the Leclerc-Ferrari partnership is already carving out its place in the history of the Scuderia. The latest extension reinforces a bond that has grown steadily since Charles Leclerc first joined Ferrari in 2019 and confirms that both sides remain committed to pursuing Formula 1’s ultimate prize together.
Closing in on a Ferrari record
As has become common practice in Formula 1, Ferrari did not reveal the exact duration of the new agreement. Modern contracts typically include performance-related clauses that remain confidential between the driver and the team, making it difficult to determine the precise timeframe involved.
What is already clear, however, is that Charles Leclerc is moving closer to a significant milestone in Ferrari history. The 2027 Formula 1 season will mark his ninth campaign racing for the Scuderia. While Michael Schumacher’s record of 11 consecutive seasons in red remains ahead, the ever-expanding Formula 1 calendar means Charles Leclerc is almost certain to surpass the German legend in total Grands Prix started for Ferrari.
With more races now included in each championship season than during Schumacher’s era, Charles Leclerc is on course to become the Ferrari driver with the most Formula 1 appearances in the team’s history, a remarkable achievement considering the names that have represented the Scuderia over the decades.
Did Charles Leclerc have other options?
The Formula 1 driver market has remained relatively stable heading into the new regulatory era. Most of the sport’s leading drivers chose not to make major moves before seeing which teams would emerge strongest under the 2026 regulations.
There was speculation that Aston Martin could have been a potential destination for Charles Leclerc. His manager, Nicolas Todt, was undoubtedly familiar with Lawrence Stroll and the ambitions of the Silverstone-based team. However, Aston Martin has struggled to meet expectations, while Ferrari’s overall package has shown encouraging signs.
The SF-26 has demonstrated strong chassis performance, impressive mechanical grip and competitive pace in technical sectors. The primary weakness has been the power unit, particularly compared to Mercedes. Nevertheless, Charles Leclerc appears convinced that Ferrari’s future development path, including the potential benefits linked to the ADUO system, could place the Scuderia in genuine championship contention in the coming seasons.
Ferrari did not enjoy the explosive start to the regulations that it achieved in 2022, but there is growing belief that the competitive trend could be different this time around. Instead of fading after an early surge, the team hopes to build momentum and close the gap to its rivals over the long term.
For Charles Leclerc, remaining in red may not simply be an emotional choice. It may also reflect confidence that Ferrari is moving in the right direction and offers the best opportunity to fight for world titles in the years ahead.
A message to Lewis Hamilton
Throughout his Ferrari career, Charles Leclerc has measured himself against some of Formula 1’s most respected drivers. First came Sebastian Vettel, then Carlos Sainz, and now Lewis Hamilton, statistically the most successful driver in the history of the sport.
Lewis Hamilton’s arrival never signaled a lack of faith in Charles Leclerc from Ferrari. However, bringing a seven-time world champion to Maranello inevitably altered the internal dynamics of the team and raised questions about Ferrari’s long-term priorities.
This new contract extension provides a clear answer. By committing his future to Ferrari once again, Charles Leclerc has effectively reaffirmed that he remains one of the central pillars of the Scuderia’s project.
Whatever Lewis Hamilton ultimately decides regarding his own future, Charles Leclerc has made his position crystal clear. Recent comments from Lewis Hamilton suggest he is prepared to continue racing for several more years, but Ferrari has now ensured that its long-term future will continue to feature the Monegasque driver.
The message behind the extension is simple: Charles Leclerc remains “Always Red.” More than six years after joining Ferrari, he continues to place his trust in Maranello, convinced that the dream of winning a world championship together is still very much alive.
