Antonelli’s championship lead shrinks again after dramatic Silverstone race
The 2026 Formula 1 Drivers’ Championship tightened once again following a dramatic British Grand Prix at Silverstone. Charles Leclerc finally returned to the top step of the podium with a memorable Ferrari victory, while championship leader Andrea Kimi Antonelli suffered another costly setback.
After appearing on course to challenge for victory, the Mercedes driver saw his race unravel due to technical problems. Combined with an earlier penalty that became even more damaging following the late Safety Car, Antonelli recorded his second retirement-like scoreless result in the last three Grands Prix, allowing his closest rivals to close the gap in the title fight.
George Russell made the biggest gain among the leading contenders. A fortunate second-place finish reduced the deficit to his Mercedes teammate to just 25 points, while Lewis Hamilton’s podium for Ferrari leaves him 32 points behind the championship leader.
Charles Leclerc’s victory was equally significant. The Monegasque finally ended his winless streak and moved up to 108 points, reducing his deficit to Antonelli to 71 points and keeping himself within reach as the season approaches its midpoint.
Further down the order, valuable points were also scored by Isack Hadjar, Liam Lawson, Gabriel Bortoleto, Franco Colapinto and Pierre Gasly, strengthening their positions in an increasingly competitive midfield battle.
