Jenson Button has sounded a warning regarding the future of Lewis Hamilton at Ferrari: the technical revolution coming in 2026 could determine the seven-time world champion’s fate with the Scuderia. Speaking candidly about Lewis Hamilton’s journey in Maranello, the former British driver emphasized that 2026 may represent the ultimate turning point in the career of the 40-year-old from Stevenage.
According to Button, the introduction of the new technical regulations will be Lewis Hamilton’s toughest challenge yet, as he continues to search for the right balance after moving from Mercedes to Ferrari. After a complicated start with the team, Hamilton currently sits sixth in the Drivers’ Championship with 125 points, including a Sprint race victory in China, but he has struggled to find consistent results.
“Either the best Lewis Hamilton, or ready to walk away”
During an interview with Sky Sports F1 in Singapore, Jenson Button shared his perspective clearly: “We’ve seen flashes of brilliance from him during the year,” he said, “but not the consistency needed to have complete confidence in the car. He no longer has the familiar team around him that he had at Mercedes. It takes time to adapt.”
The 2009 world champion added, “With the 2026 regulation changes, which will be massive compared to the current rules, we will see either the best Lewis Hamilton or a Lewis ready to walk away.”
Lewis Hamilton himself acknowledges the adaptation challenges but remains confident: “The car is still a bit twitchy, and I don’t always feel 100% under braking. But we are progressing, even if the results don’t yet show it.”
Thus, 2026 will be more than just another season: for Lewis Hamilton, it could represent the last chance to return to the dominant champion that the Formula 1 world knows.
