A phenomenal performance from Charles Leclerc turned the Japanese Grand Prix at Suzuka into his personal showcase. Despite being heavily penalized by the unlucky timing of a Safety Car, the Monegasque driver fought his way to a well-deserved podium through a series of spectacular maneuvers. The Ferrari star earned his place on the third step of the podium with a sequence of masterful overtakes, almost all executed on the outside of Turn 1—a notoriously difficult spot to pass competitors.
Leclerc pulled off two brilliant overtakes in that very section, first on his Maranello teammate Lewis Hamilton and then on George Russell. The latter move came after a long, thrilling battle in which the #16 first executed a defensive masterclass and then managed an incredible counter-overtake at the only opportunity when the Mercedes driver had briefly gotten ahead of the Ferrari.
It was precisely the overtake on Russell that sent Leclerc’s race engineer, Bryan Bozzi, into a frenzy over the radio. For a brief moment, Bozzi abandoned his ‘official’ role and transformed into Charles Leclerc’s number one fan, shouting into the headset, “You’ve got nerves of steel, Charles.” It’s hard not to agree.
Charles Leclerc’s podium at the 2026 Japanese Grand Prix was therefore a testament to his elite overtaking ability and mental resilience. Based on the content of the radio exchanges with Bryan Bozzi, the bond between driver and engineer is at an all-time high, providing Ferrari with the perfect foundation as they head into the next phase of the championship fight.
