Ferrari chairman John Elkann has admitted that for the Maranello team being able to win the 2022 Formula One world championship would be like ‘going to Mars’, as Ferrari looks to secure its first F1 title since 2008, when Felipe Massa and Kimi Raikkonen won the Constructors title for the Maranello team.
That is the difficulty level of the challenge which John Elkann feels lies ahead for Scuderia Ferrari in their duel with Red Bull and Max Verstappen for the 2022 Formula 1 titles.
Scuderia Ferrari Monegasque driver Charles Leclerc is currently leading the way in the 2022 Formula One World Championship standings ahead of the Miami Grand Prix which takes place next weekend, but after the unfortunate outcome of the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix at the Autodromo Enzo e Dino Ferrari, it is Max Verstappen who is now in the ascendancy after recovering many points at the end of a race in which Carlos Sainz was taken out by Daniel Ricciardo on the first lap and Charles Leclerc made a mistake in the second part of the Imola race and had to settle for sixth place.
Scuderia Ferrari had a very good start to the 2022 Formula 1 championship: Charles Leclerc won the Bahrain Grand Prix, while Carlos Sainz took P2 in Sakhir, making it a perfect weekend for the Maranello team in the opening race. The Italian side confirmed from the early stages of the previous campaign the decision to abandon the development of their 2021 F1 car and instead focus mainly on building a competitive challenger for the current season.

This looks to have paid off for now, with the Italian side ending their wait for a victory with Charles Leclerc’s triumph at the Bahrain International Circuit in Sakhir, before repeating the result just two events later to steal a march on their rivals in the battle for the F1 titles. In a recent interview for F1TV after Scuderia Ferrari’s encouraging start to 2022, John Elkann admitted that taking the step from winning races to clinching the F1 title remains hige big challenge.
“We said we’d be competitive, which we are. From being competitive to winning, it’s like going to the moon or going to Mars. [It’s] extremely difficult. We well know that championships are won or lost at the last race, or the last lap, and these are with variables we control and many that we don’t, which is why Formula 1 is such an exciting sport. And we are, as Ferrari, so excited about this challenge.” – Ferrari chairman John Elkann concluded.
