Williams managed to place both cars ahead of the Ferraris, but Carlos Sainz knows he’ll need to keep an eye on Charles Leclerc. In qualifying for the Miami GP, Max Verstappen secured pole position, with Lando Norris starting alongside him in second. A solid third place for Kimi Antonelli, the eighteen-year-old driver who continues to grow.
Further back, the battle will be fierce right from the start. Speaking to F1 TV, Carlos Sainz said he’ll try to stay ahead of Leclerc’s Ferrari, even though he knows very well how quick his former teammate can be during the race.
No concern about Lewis Hamilton, as “Lewis is starting quite far back,” said the Spaniard. The seven-time world champion will in fact start from twelfth after a rather poor qualifying.
As for Charles Leclerc, however, Carlos Sainz issued a warning: “Charles, in race trim—as we saw in Jeddah—sometimes has almost the fastest car on the track. So in my opinion, Charles will eventually overtake us.” The #55 expects, however, to be able to fight with the rest of the field: “Against everyone else, we’ll be competitive.”
Carlos Sainz: “A perfect race needed to score points”
After retiring from the Sprint Race, Carlos Sainz is eager to bounce back in Sunday’s race, which will be more important in terms of results.
“I’m very happy with the result in qualifying. I felt good in the car from FP1 and knew I was quick this weekend, so it’s positive to have had a clean session and gotten the most out of the car,” the Williams driver said in a statement.
“The weekend isn’t over yet. We still need to have a perfect race if we want to bring home important points, so full focus on tomorrow,” he concluded.
