2023 marked the year of Max Verstappen’s dominance with Red Bull, which raises the question of whether the same situation will continue into 2024. Former Ferrari team principal Stefano Domenicali discussed this on the sidelines of the presentation of the new agreement between Formula 1 and Pirelli.
The head of Formula 1 was asked about the current grid’s level. “We have many very strong drivers today. It’s hard to say who would perform better than Verstappen in equal machinery, but certainly, in F1, the drivers are not a problem, and they won’t be in the coming years,” Stefano Domenicali stated. “Just look at the qualifying gaps, which are always getting smaller. We also have drivers who are stars on and off the track.”
Furthermore, when talking about the upcoming Formula 1 season, Stefano Domenicali emphasized the possibility of witnessing a shift in performance on the track despite the presence of the budget cap. “McLaren is the perfect example to respond to all those who said it would be impossible to develop the cars under the budget cap. It’s absolutely not true, and in fact, a team that started poorly managed to return to the front, with three consecutive podium finishes. For this reason, I’m confident that next year, we could have a very competitive championship,” added the former Team Principal of Ferrari.
Given the significant gap seen this season between Red Bull and the rest of the teams, it remains challenging to imagine a different situation next year, at least in the early races. However, it will be very interesting to see what emerges from the final races of the 2023 Formula One season and then to observe the changes various teams have made during the 2024 tests.
