Mercedes Team Principal Toto Wolff, following the Monaco GP, commented on the new technical directive set to be introduced in Barcelona and shared some thoughts on Ferrari. Who will benefit most from it?
Mercedes did not achieve the desired results at the Monaco GP. This weekend, F1 heads to Spain for the final race of the triple header. Starting in Barcelona, the FIA will introduce a new technical directive concerning flexible wings, requiring all teams to modify the front wings of their cars so that they pass the new and stricter tests. According to Toto Wolff, there are still many uncertainties surrounding this new TD from Barcelona, and it will be hard to determine who might benefit most from it until the cars hit the track. However, one remark about Ferrari did not go unnoticed.
Mercedes has already taken steps forward, and its new front wing—stiffer than the current one—has already debuted in free practice sessions at Imola and Monaco. This has allowed the Brackley-based team to begin collecting initial data.
Will the Spanish GP mark a turning point in the championship?
Ferrari Team Principal Fred Vasseur has never hidden that the new regulations in Barcelona could be a turning point in the championship, while Toto Wolff remains unconvinced. After the Monaco GP, the Mercedes boss made some statements to Sky Sports F1 about the new TD: “I think what we’ve seen is that Ferrari is probably the most conservative on flexible wings.” – he pointed out.
According to Toto Wolff, Ferrari has taken a more conservative approach to the front wing compared to other teams since the start of the season. Could this benefit the Maranello team? Toto Wolff added: “I don’t know what it will do to the pecking order. It’s something we need to look into. I’m not sure it will change things, but it’s another angle of curiosity—I don’t know how it’s going to go.” – the Mercedes team principal concluded.
