Ferrari has publicly declared its confidence in Fred Vasseur, but Will Buxton believes the statement may have had the opposite effect to the one intended. Rather than ending speculation over the team principal’s future, the Formula 1 broadcaster sees the unusually public show of support as a potential warning sign.
Questions surrounding Vasseur intensified after Christian Horner became linked with Ferrari, adding another layer of speculation around the leadership structure at Maranello. In response, Ferrari issued a statement after the Azerbaijan Grand Prix insisting that it retained full confidence in its team principal and dismissing suggestions that a change was imminent.
Will Buxton sees Ferrari statement as bad news for Fred Vasseur
Buxton was unconvinced that the announcement should automatically be viewed as reassuring for the French manager. Speaking on the Up To Speed podcast, he argued that public declarations of complete boardroom support in professional sport often arrive when someone’s position has already become vulnerable.
His reaction was influenced partly by Ferrari’s own recent history. The team publicly supported Mattia Binotto shortly before his departure, with a statement backing the former team principal arriving only around two weeks before he ultimately left the role.
For Buxton, that precedent makes Ferrari’s decision to address Vasseur’s position so explicitly difficult to ignore. He suggested that receiving the full backing of an organisation’s leadership can sometimes be interpreted as a sign that the pressure has already reached a critical stage rather than proof that a job is secure.
Ferrari rumours create the instability Will Buxton fears
Buxton also focused on the effect prolonged speculation can have on a Formula 1 operation. He contrasted Ferrari’s situation with Cadillac, which he praised for making a recent personnel decision quickly and implementing its changes before widespread media speculation could develop.
In his view, repeated rumours, conversations and uncertainty around senior positions can undermine the stability required both at the circuit and inside the factory. That is why he believes Ferrari’s public intervention may be particularly uncomfortable for Vasseur rather than simply reassuring.
The pressure comes at a difficult point in Ferrari’s 2026 campaign. The team is currently second in the Constructors’ Championship, but its hopes of fighting for the title have largely disappeared as the season has progressed.
Fred Vasseur faces another important weekend in Malaysia
Attention will now turn towards the upcoming Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia, where Vasseur’s position is expected to remain one of the major off-track talking points surrounding Ferrari.
Ted Kravitz has offered a more optimistic assessment of the Frenchman’s prospects. He believes Vasseur’s job should remain safe if Ferrari can preserve second place in the Constructors’ Championship, effectively securing the silver-medal position behind the championship leader.
Even so, the external pressure has clearly intensified. Ferrari’s decision to address the situation publicly shows how prominent the speculation has become, while Buxton interprets that intervention very differently from those who see it as proof of long-term stability.
Christian Horner remains part of Ferrari leadership speculation
Christian Horner’s availability has contributed significantly to the latest discussion. The former Red Bull team principal has returned to the Formula 1 employment market a little over a year after his dismissal, and he has been mentioned as one of the possible alternatives should Ferrari eventually decide to make a change.
Horner’s recent comments about Ferrari helped trigger another wave of debate over Vasseur’s future, even though Ferrari has responded by reiterating its confidence in the current team principal.
For Buxton, however, the central issue is not simply whether Ferrari genuinely supports Vasseur today. His concern is what it means when a team feels compelled to make that support public at all. With results still under scrutiny and the Constructors’ Championship battle continuing, the coming races will determine whether the statement succeeds in restoring calm or merely becomes another part of the discussion surrounding Ferrari’s leadership.
