Charles Leclerc has delivered another strong defence of Fred Vasseur after speculation over the Ferrari team principal’s future spread beyond social media and reached employees inside Maranello. The Monegasque believes the rumours have created unnecessary unrest around the team at a time when Ferrari should be concentrating on its work.
Questions over Vasseur’s position have intensified despite the French manager having a Ferrari contract covering the 2027 season. His future has been debated before, but the latest wave of speculation gathered momentum following comments from Christian Horner and Ferrari’s continuing struggle to keep pace with Mercedes during the 2026 campaign.
Charles Leclerc unhappy with effect of Fred Vasseur rumours inside Ferrari
Leclerc explained that he generally isolates himself from the noise surrounding Formula 1 on social media and therefore had not initially been aware of the full scale of the discussion. What concerned him more was discovering that many Ferrari employees were reading the speculation surrounding Vasseur’s position.
In the Ferrari driver’s view, that was not helpful for the organisation. He acknowledged that neither he nor the team can control everything written about them, making it more productive to focus on the work taking place inside Maranello.
Leclerc stressed that the internal picture had remained consistent throughout the controversy. Ferrari personnel continued to place their trust in Vasseur, he explained, even though a very different impression had developed externally. That gap between the internal reality described by Leclerc and the public discussion is why he believes the team sometimes has to restate its position.
Ferrari has now done precisely that, publicly reinforcing its support for the French manager after another period of intense scrutiny. The latest episode follows a wider sequence of questions over Fred Vasseur’s future at Ferrari.
Charles Leclerc calls some speculation disrespectful
While Leclerc accepts that constructive criticism is part of Formula 1, he believes there is an important distinction between criticism and speculation that simply generates instability. He described some of the recent rumours as unnecessary and argued that stories whose only effect is to create unrest can become disrespectful towards the people working inside the team.
The Monegasque also emphasised the effort being made throughout Ferrari. His frustration was therefore not directed at legitimate analysis of the team’s performance, but at rumours about personnel changes that, in his view, do little to help those trying to improve the situation.
Leclerc’s support is also personal. He has known Vasseur for many years and considers their relationship special. According to the Ferrari driver, one of the team principal’s strongest qualities is his ability to understand and manage people, find the appropriate words in difficult situations and use his leadership style to bring out the best in those around him.
That human-management ability is one of the reasons Leclerc regards Vasseur as particularly important to Ferrari. More developments involving the Monegasque can be followed through the Charles Leclerc section.
Christian Horner comments intensified Ferrari speculation
The latest debate around Vasseur accelerated after Christian Horner discussed Ferrari ahead of the Azerbaijan Grand Prix. The former Red Bull team principal indicated that he would be prepared to abandon his preference for taking an ownership stake in his next Formula 1 project if the opportunity to lead Ferrari arose, describing the Maranello position as an exceptional prospect.
Horner has been searching for a route back into Formula 1 since leaving Red Bull in July 2025. His comments consequently fuelled speculation that Ferrari could consider changing team principal at the end of 2026, with WEC chief Antonello Coletta and deputy Formula 1 team principal Jérôme d’Ambrosio also mentioned in connection with the position.
However, the possibility of Christian Horner joining Ferrari remains part of the wider speculation surrounding the leadership structure rather than a confirmed succession plan.
Ferrari responded this week by making its official position clear and reiterating that it continues to have confidence in Vasseur. The renewed backing follows previous occasions when the team has had to address questions surrounding its team principal, with Ferrari again publicly supporting Fred Vasseur amid pressure around Maranello.
Charles Leclerc and Fred Vasseur share a long relationship
Vasseur has led Ferrari since replacing Mattia Binotto in December 2022. It has previously been reported that Leclerc played a role in encouraging Ferrari to make that leadership change and that the Monegasque expected Vasseur’s arrival to strengthen his status as the team’s number one driver.
That formal hierarchy never materialised, yet Leclerc’s support for Vasseur has remained consistent. The relationship between the two predates their time together at Ferrari, helping explain why the driver speaks so positively about the Frenchman’s leadership qualities.
Lewis Hamilton has also repeatedly supported Vasseur since joining Ferrari in 2025. The British driver’s move to Maranello has been closely associated with the team principal, adding another influential voice inside the team in favour of continuity.
Even with backing from both Ferrari drivers, speculation over Vasseur has repeatedly returned. The current situation is particularly sensitive because Ferrari is struggling to maintain its challenge to Mercedes while Red Bull and McLaren are closing in, keeping results and leadership under simultaneous scrutiny.
Ferrari tries to restore focus around Fred Vasseur
For Leclerc, the central issue is not whether Ferrari should be immune from criticism. He accepts that constructive scrutiny is legitimate. His concern is the effect repeated leadership rumours can have on employees who encounter them while trying to perform their jobs.
That distinction explains why he has reacted so firmly. From his perspective, Ferrari’s internal commitment to Vasseur has not changed, whereas the external narrative has suggested instability and the possibility of an imminent replacement.
Ferrari’s public statement was intended to reinforce that position. With the 2026 season still presenting major competitive challenges, Leclerc’s message is that the team would be better served by concentrating on performance rather than allowing recurring speculation about the team principal to dominate the conversation around Maranello.
