Lewis Hamilton believes Mercedes reliability concerns could have major championship consequences
Lewis Hamilton believes Mercedes may eventually have to pay the price for the reliability problems that have affected its 2026 Formula 1 campaign, with the seven-time World Champion suggesting that penalties for exceeding the permitted allocation of power unit components could become unavoidable before the end of the season.
The Ferrari driver arrives at this stage of the championship with growing momentum after securing his breakthrough victory for the Scuderia at the Spanish Grand Prix and following it up with another strong podium finish at Silverstone. Those results, combined with two recent non-scores for championship leader Andrea Kimi Antonelli, have dramatically tightened the drivers’ standings, leaving Lewis Hamilton just 31 points behind in what is becoming one of the closest title battles of recent years.
Ferrari’s resurgence has not only strengthened Lewis Hamilton’s championship challenge but has also revitalised the team’s Constructors’ Championship campaign. Since the Canadian Grand Prix, Ferrari has consistently scored heavily, allowing the Italian outfit to reduce the gap to its rivals while continuing development of the SF-26 with additional upgrades expected over the coming races.
Ferrari’s consistency could become a decisive advantage
While outright pace remains incredibly important in modern Formula 1, reliability often proves just as critical over the course of a long championship. Ferrari appears to have found an excellent balance between performance and durability, with the SF-26 completing race weekends without the technical setbacks that have increasingly troubled some of its closest competitors.
Mercedes, by contrast, has demonstrated that the W17 possesses race-winning speed, but its reliability record has raised growing concerns inside the paddock. Electrical and battery-related issues have already forced both Mercedes drivers into costly retirements this season, and the team is believed to be approaching the limits of the FIA’s permitted component allocation far earlier than initially anticipated.
Should Mercedes exceed the number of batteries or other power unit elements allowed under Formula 1 regulations, the team would be forced to accept grid penalties at selected Grands Prix—a scenario that could significantly influence both the Drivers’ and Constructors’ Championship battles during the second half of the campaign.
Lewis Hamilton expects Mercedes could eventually exceed the FIA component limits
Reflecting on the contrasting situations of Ferrari and Mercedes, Lewis Hamilton explained that he had been particularly impressed by the reliability of the SF-26 throughout the season. He also observed that power unit reliability across the Formula 1 grid appeared to have become more problematic than in previous years.
Although Lewis Hamilton admitted he did not know the precise status of George Russell’s and Andrea Kimi Antonelli’s battery allocations, he indicated that Mercedes could eventually be forced into taking penalties if the team exceeded the maximum number of permitted components established by the FIA’s sporting regulations.
Lewis Hamilton also stressed that Ferrari’s immediate objective remains unchanged. Regardless of whether victory is achievable at every circuit, he believes the team must continue extracting the maximum possible result from every race weekend, consistently scoring valuable championship points and capitalising whenever rivals encounter reliability issues or suffer setbacks.
That philosophy could ultimately prove decisive over a 24-race Formula 1 season. Even if Mercedes continues to produce one of the fastest cars on the grid, repeated reliability concerns—and the possibility of future grid penalties—could hand Ferrari a significant strategic advantage. With further upgrades planned for the SF-26 and its reliability continuing to stand out as one of its greatest strengths, Lewis Hamilton and teammate Charles Leclerc will be hoping that consistency becomes one of Ferrari’s most powerful weapons as the fight for both Formula 1 world championships intensifies.
