Jacques Villeneuve believes Ferrari finally showed the kind of bold decision-making that has often been missing from the team’s Formula 1 campaigns, with Lewis Hamilton’s commanding victory at the Spanish Grand Prix serving as the perfect example.
Before Barcelona, Ferrari had endured a lengthy wait for another Grand Prix victory. The Italian team had not stood on the top step of the podium since Carlos Sainz secured victory in Mexico at the end of the 2024 season. While the Scuderia consistently remained among the frontrunners and collected numerous podium finishes, race wins repeatedly slipped away as Mercedes, Red Bull and McLaren found ways to stay ahead.
That trend was finally broken in Barcelona, where Lewis Hamilton delivered a dominant performance that not only ended Ferrari’s win drought but also strengthened the belief that the Maranello squad could become a genuine contender in the Formula 1 world championship fight.
Speaking after the race, Jacques Villeneuve highlighted what he considered to be a major change in Ferrari’s approach. The 1997 Formula 1 world champion suggested that Ferrari chose to attack rather than settle for a safe result, something he believes has not always been the case in previous seasons.
Ferrari’s aggressive mindset earns praise
The foundations of Lewis Hamilton’s victory were laid before the race had even properly settled into rhythm. Ferrari opted to place the British driver on the soft tyre compound at the start, a strategy shared by very few of the leading contenders.
The decision immediately opened up alternative tactical possibilities. Ferrari then brought Lewis Hamilton into the pits relatively early, creating pressure on the cars around him and forcing rivals to react.
George Russell was among those who had little choice but to respond to Ferrari’s move in an attempt to avoid losing track position. Behind the scenes, Ferrari had already committed to a more aggressive race plan than many expected. According to Jacques Villeneuve, this represented a refreshing departure from the cautious style that has often attracted criticism from fans and pundits alike. Ferrari’s strategy department has frequently faced accusations of being too conservative, with the team sometimes appearing reluctant to gamble for victory.
In Barcelona, however, Ferrari embraced the risk.
Jacques Villeneuve explained that Ferrari appeared willing to sacrifice the security of a comfortable second-place finish in pursuit of a race-winning opportunity. In his view, the team adopted an “all or nothing” mentality and refused to be satisfied with merely standing on the podium.
That aggressive philosophy ultimately paid off. While a Virtual Safety Car period later worked in Ferrari’s favour by reducing the time lost during Lewis Hamilton’s final pit stop, Jacques Villeneuve felt the team deserved credit for putting itself in a position to benefit from such circumstances.
Rather than waiting for luck to arrive, Ferrari created an opportunity through decisive action.
Lewis Hamilton converts strategy into domination
Of course, even the best strategy requires execution, and Lewis Hamilton delivered one of the strongest performances of the 2026 Formula 1 season.
The seven-time world champion controlled the race brilliantly, combining strong tyre management with impressive pace throughout each stint. As the laps ticked down, Ferrari’s advantage became increasingly clear.
By the chequered flag, the Briton had built a winning margin of almost 20 seconds despite a late Virtual Safety Car neutralisation compressing the field dynamics and limiting opportunities to extend the lead further. The scale of the victory caught the attention of many observers across the Formula 1 paddock. Ferrari had looked competitive throughout the Barcelona weekend, but the race pace shown by the SF-26 exceeded many expectations.
The result also provided further evidence that Ferrari’s recent development programme may be producing meaningful gains. The team introduced important upgrades in Spain, and the package appeared to improve both balance and tyre performance. Although Charles Leclerc endured a more challenging race weekend and was unable to fight at the front alongside his teammate, Ferrari left Barcelona encouraged by the overall competitiveness of the car.
If the upgrades continue to perform well across different circuits, both Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc could become increasingly important figures in the championship battle during the second half of the season.
Title fight pressure could favour Lewis Hamilton
Lewis Hamilton’s victory came at a crucial moment in the championship.
Kimi Antonelli’s retirement denied Mercedes a valuable points haul and reduced the gap at the top of the standings. While Mercedes remain the benchmark team of the season, the championship picture suddenly appears far more competitive than it did just a few weeks ago.
Jacques Villeneuve believes the psychological aspect of the battle could become a major factor if Ferrari continues to close the gap.
The former world champion pointed out that neither Kimi Antonelli nor George Russell has previously experienced the pressure of fighting through an entire Formula 1 title campaign against a driver with Lewis Hamilton’s record and experience. According to Jacques Villeneuve, speed alone does not determine championships. Momentum swings, mistakes and the ability to handle pressure often prove decisive when a season reaches its critical stages. Lewis Hamilton, with seven world titles and well over a decade of championship battles behind him, possesses an advantage that cannot be measured purely through lap times or data.
Jacques Villeneuve suggested that it remains unclear how Mercedes’ drivers will react if the championship battle intensifies and the Briton begins applying sustained pressure at the front.
For Ferrari, that possibility represents an exciting opportunity. The Barcelona Grand Prix may ultimately be remembered not only as Lewis Hamilton’s first victory with the Scuderia, but also as the weekend that transformed the complexion of the Formula 1 title race.
More importantly, it may have revealed a Ferrari team that is finally prepared to take the risks required to become champions once again.
