Are historic Formula 1 circuits really at risk of disappearing? We would like to be able to answer this question with a resounding no, but the situation is extremely contentious. Despite renovation efforts, some historic circuits like Imola, Monaco, and many others could see their confirmations on the F1 calendar denied in just a few years.
Indeed, the problem affecting the reconfirmation of circuits that have made history in the premier motorsport category is often discussed. In fact, during the presentation of the renovations works at the Monza circuit a few months ago, former Ferrari boss Stefano Domenicali, currently the Formula 1 chief executive officer, had already spoken about a significant risk that applies to all historic circuits.
Monza itself is currently a construction site. In the historic Italian circuit, renovation works are underway not only on the track but also on all areas adjacent to the circuit. The optimized spaces should ensure its confirmation for many upcoming seasons.
The excellent work being done at Monza specifically concerns the paddock areas, with much larger two-story spaces for all members of the Paddock Club, now an integral part of F1 weekends. Areas for restaurants and other facilities will be set up within the circuit for all fans holding passes.
Circuits like Imola, on the other hand, are at risk of disappearing precisely because of the lack of suitable spaces to create these highly sought-after areas. The world of Formula 1 is getting used to very spacious areas, as seen in the less traditional circuits that are becoming increasingly typical of race weekends.
Ultimately, it’s not a political or even economic issue. The blame and the risk stem from much more complicated and difficult-to-manage factors.
