George Russell’s Mercedes renewal hides a clue about a potential Ferrari future
George Russell has officially extended his contract with Mercedes, but questions remain about its duration, sparking speculation about a possible move to Ferrari in the future. After months of negotiations, the rising star of the Silver Arrows will remain Brackley’s lead driver for the technical revolution planned for next season – a golden opportunity with what the paddock describes as the car to beat. However, in 2027, everything could change.
Patience pays off: Mercedes keeps Russell
It took time and patience, but Mercedes has decided not to part ways with George Russell, one of the standout drivers of recent years. His talent was already evident during his seasons at Williams, but his experience at Brackley has solidified his position. His five Grand Prix victories, achieved in cars that were far from dominant, are proof of his skills, placing him on a level comparable with the highly celebrated Charles Leclerc.
As is often the case with Mercedes announcements, the official renewal did not disclose the contract’s expiration date. It is a multi-year deal, but not a very long-term commitment. The most widely discussed scenario, as noted by Roberto Chinchero on Motorsport.com, is a two-year contract with exit clauses at the end of 2026 – a structure similar to the one that allowed Lewis Hamilton to move to Ferrari.
Russell with Mercedes until 2026: after that, anything is possible
Beyond a slightly reduced sponsor-related workload, it seems George Russell has built in a possible exit strategy at the end of next season. This clause benefits Mercedes as well, in case there’s renewed interest from Max Verstappen, who could be available at the end of 2026.
The British driver has therefore chosen to protect himself in case Brackley’s project does not meet expectations. In the background, Ferrari could bid farewell to Lewis Hamilton at the end of 2026 and will need to decide whether to promote young talent like Oliver Bearman or go for an established star. Another alternative could be Aston Martin, with Fernando Alonso edging closer to retirement.
