Ferrari’s reliability strength could become the deciding factor in the 2026 Formula 1 championship
Charles Leclerc’s memorable victory at Silverstone has done far more than add another trophy to Ferrari’s collection. It has significantly changed the narrative surrounding the 2026 Formula 1 season, with increasing attention now being paid not only to outright performance but also to reliability. While Mercedes continues to field arguably the quickest package on the grid with the W17, recurring mechanical problems are beginning to threaten its ambitions in both the drivers’ and constructors’ championships.
Former Formula 1 driver Anthony Davidson believes this balance could ultimately work in Ferrari’s favor. Although the Italian team may still trail Mercedes in outright pace on certain circuits, its remarkable reliability record has quietly become one of the strongest assets in the championship fight. As the calendar enters its decisive phase, simply reaching the chequered flag consistently could prove just as valuable as having the fastest car.
Anthony Davidson believes Ferrari has an increasingly realistic path to both world titles
Speaking during Sky Sports F1’s post-race analysis following the British Grand Prix, Anthony Davidson examined the evolving championship picture and argued that Ferrari now has genuine reasons to believe it can challenge Mercedes until the very end of the season.
Rather than focusing purely on lap time, the former Grand Prix driver highlighted the growing importance of reliability, noting that Mercedes’ repeated technical setbacks had become impossible to ignore. In his assessment, the Brackley-based team possesses extraordinary speed, but mechanical failures have already cost valuable points and could continue to shape the outcome of the championship.
Davidson explained that George Russell now sits only one race victory behind championship leader Kimi Antonelli, with just 25 points separating the two Mercedes drivers. He suggested that the team’s recurring reliability concerns would inevitably become a major source of pressure as the title battle intensifies.
He also indicated that Ferrari would naturally look at the current situation with growing optimism. According to Davidson, the Scuderia may recognize that while the SF-26 is not always the outright fastest Formula 1 car, its exceptional dependability could allow it to capitalize whenever Mercedes encounters further technical problems. In his view, Ferrari’s car has been virtually faultless throughout the season, giving the Maranello team an important strategic advantage over its closest rival.
Mercedes has already surrendered valuable championship points through reliability failures
The numbers help explain why Davidson considers reliability such a critical factor. Mercedes has claimed seven victories from the opening nine Grands Prix, demonstrating that the W17 remains the benchmark in terms of outright performance. However, several costly mechanical failures have prevented the Silver Arrows from fully converting that pace into championship points.
George Russell appeared destined for victory in the Canadian Grand Prix before a battery-related problem abruptly ended his challenge. Kimi Antonelli has also endured a frustrating sequence of reliability issues. The young Italian retired while running in second place in Barcelona after an electrical failure, and another technical problem at Silverstone involving the left-front wheel deflector destroyed what had looked like another race-winning opportunity.
Each of those incidents has allowed Ferrari to recover valuable ground in both championship standings without necessarily possessing the fastest overall package. In a season where margins are exceptionally small, every retirement or major technical problem carries enormous consequences.
Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton remain firmly in the Formula 1 title conversation
Following the British Grand Prix, Kimi Antonelli continues to lead the drivers’ championship, but the advantage that once looked comfortable has been significantly reduced. George Russell remains just 25 points behind his Mercedes teammate, while Lewis Hamilton sits only seven points further back after steadily building momentum over recent races.
Charles Leclerc occupies fourth position in the standings, 46 points behind George Russell, but Ferrari’s improved competitiveness and consistent reliability mean the Monegasque driver remains firmly within striking distance. With numerous races still to be contested, both Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton have every opportunity to continue reducing the gap if Ferrari maintains its current trajectory.
The constructors’ championship tells a similar story. Mercedes leads the standings with 333 points, while the Maranello team has accumulated 255 points and remains the closest challenger. McLaren occupies third place with 179 points, leaving the championship increasingly focused on a direct battle between Mercedes and Ferrari.
Reliability could prove more valuable than outright speed during the second half of the season
As Formula 1 enters the second half of the 2026 campaign, the championship may ultimately be decided by consistency rather than absolute pace. Ferrari has built its recent success on minimizing mistakes, maximizing points finishes and producing one of the most dependable cars on the grid.
If Mercedes succeeds in resolving its reliability concerns, its superior performance could still make it the favorite for both championships. However, if technical failures continue to interrupt its campaign, Ferrari will be perfectly positioned to take advantage. Every retirement avoided and every solid points finish could gradually swing the momentum toward Maranello.
Anthony Davidson’s assessment reflects a growing belief within the Formula 1 paddock that Ferrari’s greatest weapon may not simply be speed, but the ability to consistently finish races. Over a long championship campaign, that level of reliability can often become the difference between narrowly missing out on a title and lifting both world championship trophies at the end of the season.
