Austrian Grand Prix: FP1 shake-up as all rookie drivers confirmed
The Formula 1 paddock heads to Austria this weekend, but before the on-track action truly gets underway, the opening free practice session will feature several fresh faces behind the wheel. Just as was the case in Barcelona two weeks ago, a number of teams will hand over their cars to young drivers during FP1 in order to comply with the FIA’s mandatory rookie driver programme.
Several of Formula 1’s most promising talents will therefore have the opportunity to gain valuable track time at the Red Bull Ring as teams continue to fulfil their required rookie practice sessions during the 2026 season.
Several young drivers set for FP1 running
Among the confirmed participants is Dino Beganovic, whose appearance was announced earlier this week. The Ferrari junior will take over Charles Leclerc’s SF-26 for the opening practice session in Austria, giving him another valuable opportunity to gain experience in Formula 1 machinery.
Ayumu Iwasa will also be in action at the Red Bull Ring, driving for Racing Bulls as part of the team’s young driver programme.
Luke Browning has also been confirmed for FP1 and will replace Carlos Sainz during the session, while Paul Aron will once again join Audi on loan from Alpine as the German manufacturer continues preparing for its Formula 1 future.
The list is completed by Ryo Hirakawa, who will take over Esteban Ocon’s Haas for the opening practice session, while Jak Crawford will replace Lance Stroll at Aston Martin during FP1.
With six rookie drivers sharing the track at Spielberg, Friday’s opening practice session promises to provide an early glimpse of several rising stars as they continue building experience at the highest level of motorsport.
