George Russell reveals how the ‘F1 Driver Chat’ is going
The drivers’ WhatsApp group
In March 2023, Lando Norris revealed the existence of a WhatsApp group for Formula 1 drivers, called ‘F1 Driver Chat’, with a profile picture featuring James Hunt.
It came to light that the drivers used the group to discuss rule interpretations, and that George Russell was somewhat the leader of the chat.
The group two years later
The chat still exists, although it doesn’t seem to be very lively, according to George Russell’s account to Bild: “We don’t talk about on-track incidents, those are things that happen and don’t need to be discussed further.”
There’s no room for light topics either: “No, we don’t talk about girlfriends. If we did, some drivers would have to message all the time. To be honest, the group isn’t as active as everyone thinks. Lewis recently started sending memes, and that surprised me.”
George Russell then clarified: “It’s mainly used to discuss topics raised during drivers’ meetings that need further clarification, like the two pit stops in Monaco. We message each other every week, but it’s definitely not one of those group chats where funny pictures are constantly being shared.”
