What is the starting grid position of all Formula 1 Grand Prix winners?. Starting Grid Positions of Winners in All 1,122 Formula 1 Grands Prix.

Red Bulll RB20, 2024 F1 race start

With his comeback from 17th on the grid in the Brazilian Grand Prix, Max Verstappen has set a new record. Here are the statistics on the starting positions of the winners of all 1,122 F1 Grands Prix in history.

Max Verstappen’s New Record
With his victory from 17th on the starting grid at the Sao Paulo GP, Max Verstappen has rewritten Formula 1’s record books. While four other drivers before him managed to win an F1 race starting from 17th or lower, the Dutchman is now the only driver in history to win races from ten different starting grid positions. But from which starting position have the most victories in the premier motorsport series been achieved?

The Other Starting Positions That Lead to F1 GP Victories
What about the third grid spot? Drivers starting from third have claimed victory 135 times, while 67 wins have come from fourth on the grid. Unsurprisingly, the further back we go on the grid, the fewer the victories—though there’s a curious exception at 10th place: 12 race winners started from there, compared to just 5 wins from ninth. Another intriguing fact is that no one has ever won a race starting from 20th (the last position in the current grid format with 10 teams of 2 cars each) or 21st. However, John Watson famously won the 1983 Long Beach GP after starting from 22nd.

Below is a summary table of the starting grid positions of the winners of all 1,122 F1 Grands Prix held from the 1950 British GP to the 2024 Brazilian GP.
