The Turkish Grand Prix has once again returned to Formula One at the last minute. While it was initially slated to step in for the cancelled Canadian Grand Prix, global travel restrictions meant it was swiftly removed from the calendar a few months ago. However, it is now back in place, standing in for the Singapore Grand Prix. With corners such as the sweeping Turn 8, as well as good memories for Team Silverstone, Turkey’s return is definitely a welcome one.
2021 Turkish Grand Prix weather forecast (Weather Info Istanbul):
From the Formula 1 teams’ point of view, different weather conditions can result in very different races, and Formula 1 teams adapt their strategy accordingly, for example using different tyres in wet conditions, and taking account of cross winds which can cause stability problems at high speeds. It is always well worth checking the weather before any grand prix as it can often throw a curve ball into the mix.
And after the rain in Belgium and Russia, it seems likely that there will also be rain during the Turkish Grand Prix next weekend. Last season rain led to a spectacular race event at Istanbul Park, conditions which Ferrari was able to capitalize on by finishing P3 and P4, despite starting from outside the top ten.
In 2020 it was slipping and sliding on the Istanbul Park track due to the new asphalt, the low temperature and eventually the rain. The asphalt has been taken care of by the organisation and with the weather forecast, this is a good thing.
In Istanbul, showers are expected throughout the weekend, especially on Saturday afternoon, when there is a 60 percent chance of rain. The Friday practice sessions should take place in dry conditions, while for Sunday there is a 25 percent chance of rain. At the same time, the temperature will not be very high, especially on race day On Friday, the maximum temperature is expected to be 22-23 degrees, but on Sunday it will be only 17-18 degrees, which means that the data gathered after the free practice sessions on Friday regarding tyre management could be less relevant for the race due to the lower temperatures. And it will be a good test to see if the asphalt has really gained grip.
