Scuderia Ferrari Monegasque driver Charles Leclerc hopes the issues behind the Maranello team’s very poor performance in the Mexican Grand Prix will not return for the last two events of the 2022 Formula 1 championship.
Charles Leclerc started the Mexican Grand Prix from seventh place after overtaking the Alfa Romeo of Valtteri Bottas on lap 1, did not have the pace to make up any further ground and was the last driver on the lead lap, 68 seconds behind the Red Bull RB18 of Max Verstappen at Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez. The Monegasque driver struggled with an ill-handling F1-75 car, which was also limited by the power unit due to the track characteristics:
“On my side, we had a few problems in qualifying, I think we could have been closer. But in the race, the DRS problem was fixed, we changed the rear wing. And then about the engine, we still had some problems. But it definitely doesn’t explain the gap that we are seeing now. So we need to work on it and try to make in order that whenever we have our bad days that they are not as bad as this one.” – Charles Leclerc pointed out.
“We maximised the performance today and it hurts to be so behind. We had no pace. We finished a minute behind Verstappen. It reminded me of Spa…It hurts to be so behind” – the Ferrari driver admitted, at the end of the 2022 Formula 1 Mexican Grand Prix.

However, the Monegasque driver is confident things will go better in the final two rounds of the championship, the Brazilian Grand Prix and the Abu Dhabi, as the Maranello team hopes to at least be able to defend its second place against Mercedes, who was clearly superior in Mexico City:
“I hope it won’t be worse than this because I don’t expect any race worse than this. It’s probably one of the worst races together with Spa, this one. But I honestly believe that it is a one-off. For the future we need to understand what do we can do in those conditions for us to be better.” – Scuderia Ferrari Monegasque driver Charles Leclerc concluded.
