During the Mexican Grand Prix weekend, Formula 1 finally got the official confirmation of Red Bull’s punishment for breaking the budget cap last season: the Austrian side will have to pay a $7million fine and will lose 10% of its aerodynamic testing allowance for the following year.
Confirmation of Red Bull’s £1.8million overspend, reduced to just over £400,000 if a tax credit would have been correctly applied, immediately became the main talking point in the paddock, with a debate over if Red Bull had got away lightly given the circumstances.
The integrity of Formula 1’s budget cap has been at stake during this process and it’s not surprising to have heard completely different reactions to the punishment from Red Bull and its main rivals, Scuderia Ferrari and Mercedes.
