The 1989 Brazilian Grand Prix opened a new era in Formula 1, launching the season at the Jacarepaguá circuit in Rio de Janeiro on 26 March 1989. It was a race filled with uncertainty, innovation and one of the most memorable debut victories in the sport’s history.
Nigel Mansell delivered a remarkable win for Scuderia Ferrari in the 640, a car that had raised serious doubts during winter testing due to repeated reliability problems. Despite expectations that the car would struggle to finish the race distance, Mansell controlled the 61-lap contest and took the chequered flag in dominant fashion. The victory also marked the first time a Formula 1 car equipped with a semi-automatic gearbox had won a Grand Prix, underlining Ferrari’s technical gamble.
Alain Prost finished second for McLaren-Honda, beginning his title defence with a strong result, while Brazilian driver Maurício Gugelmin delighted the home crowd by securing third place for March-Judd. The podium ceremony itself added to the folklore of the race, with Mansell famously injuring his hand while lifting the trophy after a win few believed was possible.
