The 1978 Brazilian Grand Prix marked a dramatic and physically demanding start to the Formula One season, held on 29 January at the Jacarepaguá circuit in Rio de Janeiro under extreme summer conditions. With track temperatures soaring to around 100°F (38°C), driver endurance and mechanical reliability proved just as important as outright speed.
Carlos Reutemann delivered a commanding flag-to-flag victory for Ferrari in the 312T2, controlling the race from the front and securing both his first win of the season and Michelin’s maiden Formula 1 triumph. Brazilian fans were treated to a historic moment as Emerson Fittipaldi finished second, claiming the first podium result for his own Fittipaldi team, while Niki Lauda completed the podium for Brabham in third place.
The brutal conditions took their toll on several leading drivers, with James Hunt, Patrick Tambay and Ferrari’s Gilles Villeneuve all crashing out before the finish. The race also featured notable milestones, including Didier Pironi scoring his first Formula 1 points in sixth place and Arrows making its championship debut, with Riccardo Patrese reaching the chequered flag in tenth.
