If you look closely at some of the 2022 Formula 1 cars now compared to how they looked when they were launched back in February or March, you will see some subtle but interesting differences. We are used to the cars themselves changing as aerodynamic upgrades are gradually introduced in pursuit of improved performance, but some teams have made changes to their initial livery with the hope of gaining important fractions of a second off their lap times.
Ferrari also resorted to scraping some paint off their overweight cars, but the most obvious example is Williams, which ran at the Imola circuit recently with a significant amount of paint removed from its chassis. But it’s far from the only team to take such action, proof of just how difficult it is for teams to get their cars down to the minimum weight.
