After a lot of work, discussions and controversies, the first Miami Grand Prix is finally upon us and Miami is doing everything possible to become one of the highlight moments of the 2022 Formula 1 season.
You might have noticed a few new merchandise ranges from teams and Formula 1, but it is not just the existing Formula 1 entities that are getting excited about the event which will take place at the Miami International Autodrome. Ther will be a lot of countless parties, activations and events as seemingly the entire city is ready to welcome the teams, drivers and a sell-out crowd to southern Florida for the race weekend.
Miami will therefore become the 11th venue in the United States to host a World Championship Formula 1 event, and it is bringing its own unique approach, as it is determined to put on a show and display the best of what the city has to offer. But for many fans watching around the world, there will be a particular focus on one specific offering. Indeed, the challenge provided by the Miami International Autodrome will represent one of the most exciting factors of the weekend for both those at the circuit and those following from far away.
As a brand new venue that was only recently completed, teams can rely on just some limited data in order to prepare on the simulators for the next round of the Formula 1 championship. This means that drivers have the possibility of learning the layout before actually taking to the track on Friday for the first fre practice session, but for the teams it will be a lot more difficult than usual to identify the ideal car setup and configurations to take advabtages of their car strengths.
And as we left the iconic Imola circuit and we now head to the newest track on the F1 calendar, in Miami, the situations between Scuderia Ferrari and Red Bull has unfortunately also changed due to the outcome of the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix which was not at all favourable for the Maranello team.
Ahead of the Imola weekend, Scuderia Ferrari and Charles Leclerc were in a strong position both on race pace and with a commanding lead in the drivers’ championship, while Red Bull were on the back foot after the Australian Grand Prix given the the disappointment of Max Verstappen’s retirement at the Albert Park circuit (and the double-DNF in Bahrain). But they had a surprisingly good weekend which has now sifted momentum on their side.
As Ferrari had its first bad weekend, with Carlos Sainz crashing out of qualifying and then being taken out of the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix by Daniel Ricciardo, and Charles Leclerc spinning late on to finish only P6 in front of the Tifosi, Red Bull took full advantage to secure a points haul that was just one point away from the maximum on offer over the Sprint weekend (58 points out of a possible 59).

Scuderia Ferrari, by contrast, ended up with just 20 points and most of them were scored in the Sprint race on Saturday evening, with Charles Leclerc in second place and Carlos Sainz in fourth, after a solid recovery from the problems in qualifying. On Sunday, Charles Leclerc limited the damage with eight points for sixth place after his late spin, but saw his championship lead cut to 27 points by Max Verstappen ahead of the Miami Grand Prix.
So now it is Ferrari’s turn to show it is able to recover from a difficult moment and get back to the sort of form that saw Charles Leclerc dominate in Melbourne at the wheel of the F1-75 car. The way the 2022 Formula 1 championship looks like it will ebb and flow between the top two teams is fascinating.
