Ferrari’s post-race celebrations after the Canadian Grand Prix delivered an unexpected comedic moment, as a playful exchange involving Lewis Hamilton and team principal Frederic Vasseur quickly went viral.
Sky UK misunderstood Lewis Hamilton’s nickname
After the chequered flag in Montreal, Lewis Hamilton and the Ferrari pit wall celebrated the seven-time Formula 1 world champion’s second-place finish over team radio. During the exchange, the French manager referred to the British driver as “Luigi” — simply the Italian version of Lewis Hamilton’s first name.
However, the joke was lost in translation for Sky UK’s broadcast team. During the post-race interviews, pit reporter Ted Kravitz asked Frederic Vasseur for clarification, believing he had heard a completely different nickname.
“What did you call Hamilton on the radio? Old G?” Ted Kravitz asked.
Frederic Vasseur replied: “Luigi.”
The Ferrari team principal then could not hold back his laughter, creating a light-hearted moment that quickly spread across social media and became a viral talking point among Formula 1 fans.
Canal+ also asked Lewis Hamilton about the ‘Luigi’ nickname
The amusing misunderstanding did not end there.
French broadcaster Canal+ opened its own interview with Lewis Hamilton by asking about the nickname directly: “Should we call you Luigi? Where does this nickname come from?” the interviewer asked.
Lewis Hamilton explained with a smile: “In Italy, that’s what my name would be.”
The playful exchange offered a lighter moment in what was otherwise a significant weekend for Ferrari, with Lewis Hamilton securing one of his strongest results since joining the Scuderia and helping lift morale inside the Maranello camp ahead of the next Formula 1 round.
