Scuderia Ferrari Spanish driver Carlos Sainz came into the 2022 Formula 1 season with the ambition of becoming Ferrari’s spearhead. After outscoring his Maranello teammate team-mate Charles Leclerc in the 2021 championship, staying on top would be the objective for any serious racing driver. But it just hasn’t worked out for Carlos Sainz. After spinning into the gravel on the second lap of the Australian Grand Prix, he watched from the pitwall as Charles Leclerc made it two wins out of three with victory in Melbourne to take a commanding world championship lead.
The Spanish driver is now 38 points behind Charles Leclerc. Carlos Sainz’s Australia disaster followed races in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia where he was well-beaten by Leclerc. Far from being Ferrari’s title shot, the Spaniard now risks being cast as Leclerc’s wingman as a result.
