In the approaching weekend, Formula 1 is poised to mark its comeback to the eagerly awaited Las Vegas Grand Prix, ending an absence of over four decades.
Leveraging the widespread success of the Netflix hit Drive to Survive, which introduced a substantial new audience to the series, American F1 owner Liberty Media sought to capitalize on its heightened popularity in the United States. This strategic move led to the decision to incorporate a race in Las Vegas, complementing the existing one in Austin.
Liberty Media had long identified Vegas as an ideal location, going to unprecedented lengths by assuming responsibility for promoting the race and procuring land near the iconic Strip to establish a permanent pit and paddock facility.
The financial commitment for the event is estimated to surpass half a billion dollars, reflecting F1’s confidence in the race’s potential success, with plans for it to be hosted until at least 2032.
Formula 1 successfully designed a 6.2km street course, including a 2km stretch along the Strip, and received approval from the city council to close this section for the race.
While the track layout itself may not be the most captivating and might not capture attention elsewhere, the spectacle of 20 F1 cars racing against the backdrop of landmarks like the Bellagio, the MGM Grand, and the new MSG Sphere at night promises to deliver visually stunning moments for Formula 1.
This departure from the intricate Caesars Palace car park circuit used in the 80s is a notable shift. Regardless of the race outcome, the successful execution of this event serves as a significant achievement for F1, emphasizing its influence and allure in the year 2023.
Formula 1 stands to gain substantially from a thrilling return to Vegas, especially considering Max Verstappen’s remarkable dominance in 2023, which has led to a cooling of interest and stagnation in domestic TV ratings. Ensuring the sustainability of its US boom will be as challenging as its initial creation.
It is understandable that both F1 and its stakeholders are sparing no effort to elevate Vegas, possibly surpassing even the level of promotion seen in Miami. However, the more you build up expectations for an event, the higher the likelihood that it may fall short of those very expectations.
In this video, we take a look at the key aspects ahead of the 2023 Formula 1 Las Vegas Grand Prix and if the event can live up to the hype:
