On 20th April 2003, there was a clound hanging over the San Marino Grand Prix, as the news came through that the mother of Ralf and Michael Schumacher had passed away, prior to the two brothers tackling the weekend in their Williams and Ferrari respectively. They both decided to race on and in qualifying, they made the front row their own. Michael was on pole, just 14 thousandths faster than his younger brother. The Ferrari man did a 1.22.327 to take his 45th pole, the 151st for Ferrari.
In the race, Michael got away well and kept the lead apart from the during his planned trips down pit lane. 62 laps of Imola later and Michael took the win to add to the pole and race fastest lap. It was a subdued and emotional podium ceremony, although Ralf wasn’t part of it having finished fourth.
