The FIA has initiated an investigation into a peculiar incident that took place at Interlagos, and the event organizers are required to provide explanations regarding a track invasion that occurred during the ongoing Brazilian Grand Prix.
The curious communication from the International Automobile Federation comes after the conclusion of the race at Interlagos. Document number 65 summons the organizers of the Brazilian Grand Prix at 5:15 PM local time, which is 9:15 PM Italian time.
The reason for this inquiry is related to an incident that took place during the Grand Prix. The official explanation stated in the FIA document reads: “Invasion of the track by the public before the conclusion of the GP of São Paulo 2023.”
Now, the stewards and the Federation have focused their attention on what happened before the Brazilian checkered flag. We will continue to follow the progress of the FIA investigation, which, at the moment, has not disclosed further details about the incident.
A similar incident has already occurred during the current Formula 1 season. Some may remember a similar note from the FIA at the end of the Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne.
UPDATE – The FIA has released its decision. “The stewards examined the video evidence and summoned the organizers,” the statement reads.
But what happened at Interlagos?
The FIA document explains: “A substantial group of spectators managed to breach the security lines, gaining access to the runoff area in turn 1.”

“The expected safety measures were not reinforced and/or were insufficient, thus creating a dangerous situation for both spectators and drivers.”
The organizers of the Grand Prix have violated Article 12.2.1 of the Sporting Code concerning safety. The FIA’s decision was as follows: “The organizers candidly admitted the failure to implement safety protocols. They were also aware that similar circumstances have occurred in Brazil before: this is an unacceptable situation that could have led to disastrous consequences.”
The organizers have stated their intention to conduct a thorough investigation into the incident to resolve any issues in preparation for the next Brazilian Grand Prix.
“The organizers must urgently (by January 30, 2024) present a formal solution to the FIA. It should adequately address the concerns expressed.”
“[…] furthermore, the stewards will formally report this incident to the FIA World Motor Sport Council.”
