Lewis Hamilton added another memorable chapter to his extraordinary Formula 1 career by securing his first victory as a Ferrari driver in Barcelona. It was a success loaded with symbolism, not only because it marked Ferrari’s first win of the season, but also because it arrived exactly 30 years after Michael Schumacher claimed his maiden victory for the Scuderia at the same Montmeló circuit.
The seven-time world champion brought an end to a lengthy winless spell, a period during which he also faced criticism from some Ferrari supporters. The triumph opens a new chapter in Lewis Hamilton’s Ferrari adventure and serves as further proof that the British driver remains capable of competing at the very highest level.
His Spanish Grand Prix victory was built on a combination of speed, experience, strategy and a small amount of fortune when the Virtual Safety Car appeared at a crucial moment. However, much of that luck was earned through Ferrari’s execution and Lewis Hamilton’s ability to put Mercedes under pressure from the very beginning of the race. Tyre choices, pit-stop timing and strong race pace all contributed to a performance that gradually forced the Silver Arrows onto the defensive.
Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff fully acknowledged the quality of the achievement and understands better than most how dangerous Lewis Hamilton can be when momentum begins to build. The Austrian knows that Mercedes will need to respond quickly to Ferrari’s latest upgrades, which proved highly effective during the Spanish Grand Prix weekend.
Toto Wolff praises Lewis Hamilton
“Congratulations to Lewis. He has worked incredibly hard and gone through many difficult moments, so I’m genuinely happy for him. If we’re not winning, I’m pleased that he is,” Toto Wolff said following the race.
The Mercedes boss also admitted that he would prefer not to find himself fighting directly against his former driver in a championship battle: “I would rather not be fighting him for the title because I know exactly what he is capable of. When he smells blood, he thrives on it. I saw it for many years. Suddenly the Hamilton train leaves the station and then it becomes very difficult to stop,” he explained.
Having spent more than a decade working alongside Lewis Hamilton at Mercedes, Toto Wolff has witnessed firsthand the British driver’s ability to build momentum once he finds confidence in both himself and his car. That experience is why the Austrian is taking Ferrari’s recent progress seriously.
Toto Wolff also believes Lewis Hamilton remains firmly in the championship picture despite the points deficit.
“Lewis absolutely has a chance of fighting for the title. He is 41 points behind, but one retirement can immediately recover 25 points. The situation is completely open. That is why we cannot afford not to finish races. We simply have to keep improving the car’s performance and power, avoid mistakes, make smart strategic decisions and remain completely focused,” he added.
The comments underline the growing belief within the paddock that Ferrari’s latest developments may have significantly altered the competitive balance. With Lewis Hamilton finally securing his first Ferrari victory and the SF-26 showing encouraging signs of progress, the championship battle appears far from settled.
For Mercedes, the message is clear: the threat posed by Lewis Hamilton and Ferrari is becoming increasingly real, and the coming races could determine whether Barcelona was a one-off success or the beginning of a genuine title challenge.
