Toto Wolff has a clear and ambitious dream for the future of Formula 1: he wants to see Scuderia Ferrari and the Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team battling it out for the 2026 World Championship title, with Lewis Hamilton back at his best and fully competitive once again. The Mercedes team principal envisions a revived rivalry between the two iconic teams, a scenario reminiscent of past seasons when both constructors were at the top of the sport.
Ferrari and Mercedes, two legendary names in Formula 1 history, were direct competitors from 2015 to 2019 during the dominant years of seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton. However, both teams have struggled to adapt to the technical revolution brought by the 2022 ground-effect regulations. Now, with half of the current season remaining before yet another regulatory overhaul, the teams based in Brackley and Maranello will soon have the chance to return to the positions they rightfully deserve in the Formula 1 hierarchy.
In an era before McLaren had undergone the successful transformation under Andrea Stella’s leadership, and before Red Bull Racing had completed both its technical evolution and the development of Max Verstappen into a dominant triple world champion, Formula 1 was defined by the fierce rivalry between Mercedes and Ferrari. On one side stood Lewis Hamilton, who would go on to win six world titles with the Silver Arrows. On the other was four-time world champion Sebastian Vettel, who left a strong mark at Ferrari despite tragically failing to capture another championship crown with the team.
Today, the landscape of Formula 1 has changed dramatically. Lewis Hamilton is now wearing red overalls as a Scuderia Ferrari driver, while Sebastian Vettel is no longer racing in the sport. Both Ferrari—the Prancing Horse—and Mercedes—the Silver Arrows—have had to surrender first to the overwhelming dominance of the Orange team, Red Bull Racing, and now to the rising power of McLaren, nicknamed “Papaya.” Every small improvement now demands a monumental effort, with teams fighting tooth and nail for every fraction of a second in lap time.
However, in less than half a season, another major regulatory reset will come into play in Formula 1, and both of these fallen giants—Ferrari and Mercedes—may finally have the chance to rise again and challenge for the top.
Toto Wolff: “Seeing Ferrari against Mercedes would be beautiful”
This is precisely the kind of future that Scuderia Ferrari fans have been hoping for, after enduring many years of frustration and unfulfilled potential. And it is also the hope of Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff, who shared his vision in an interview with Giulia Toninelli for La Gazzetta dello Sport.
“Seeing Ferrari against Mercedes [in 2026] would be beautiful, a classic,” said Toto Wolff. “And then Lewis and Charles against Kimi and George, an incredible battle. An Italian driver against an Italian car—can you imagine that?”
The Austrian team boss expects Ferrari to be competitive in terms of its power unit development for the upcoming regulatory era. He dismissed recent speculation surrounding Mercedes’ power unit performance as mere “gossip.” According to Toto Wolff, Ferrari is fortunate to have a team principal like Frédéric Vasseur, who deserves the necessary time to continue building the team.
As for the recent struggles experienced by Lewis Hamilton, Toto Wolff was adamant in his support: “He takes responsibility for the difficult moments—that’s a trait of the greats. He will return with his usual motivation.”
