Mercedes’ dominance came to an end in Barcelona as Lewis Hamilton secured his first victory with Ferrari, finishing ahead of George Russell and Lando Norris. It was a bitter afternoon for the Brackley-based team, which not only saw its winning streak come to an end but also suffered the late retirement of Andrea Kimi Antonelli just a few laps before the chequered flag.
Speaking after the race, Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff offered a candid assessment of the event. While he was full of praise for his former driver Lewis Hamilton and Ferrari’s performance, he also made no attempt to hide his frustration over what he felt was a missed opportunity for Mercedes.
Toto Wolff’s reaction after the Spanish Grand Prix
Speaking to Sky Sport F1, the Mercedes boss first paid tribute to Lewis Hamilton, with whom he shared twelve highly successful seasons that delivered multiple world championships and countless victories.
“I’ve always said that when we’re not the ones winning, I want Lewis to be the one doing it. I’m happy for him and for Ferrari. A title rival? Absolutely. He’s fast and has extraordinary mental strength. I worked with him for 12 years, so I know him very well.”
Wolff’s comments underline the respect that still exists between the two men despite Hamilton’s move to Ferrari. The Austrian manager made it clear that he believes the seven-time world champion remains a genuine contender in the championship battle.
Mercedes frustration after a missed opportunity
Despite George Russell securing second place, Toto Wolff’s disappointment with Mercedes’ overall result was impossible to hide. The team principal pointed to the costly retirement suffered by Andrea Kimi Antonelli and the points lost in recent races as evidence that Mercedes must improve its execution if it wants to remain in the title fight: “Losing cars in this way is unacceptable. Russell lost 25 points in Montreal, and today Kimi lost 18. To win, you have to finish races. Speed alone is not enough.”
The comments reflected Wolff’s belief that Mercedes had the pace to fight at the front but failed to maximise its opportunities due to reliability issues and race management.
Wolff unhappy with Mercedes’ race management
The Austrian also addressed Mercedes’ internal management of the race, referring to the battle between his two drivers shortly before Antonelli’s retirement: “I’m very angry about the way we handled things because today we lost twice. We don’t use team orders, but by managing it this way we lost the race. Now we need to understand how to handle this situation in the future.”
The statement suggests that Mercedes will review its approach to on-track battles between teammates, particularly when both drivers are competing for crucial championship points.
While Toto Wolff was willing to congratulate Lewis Hamilton and Ferrari on a deserved victory, his post-race comments made one thing clear: Mercedes left Barcelona feeling it had thrown away a valuable opportunity. With reliability concerns and strategic questions now under scrutiny, the team will be determined to respond quickly in the upcoming races.
