Scuderia Ferrari were finally back on top of the podium last weekend, as Monegasque driver Charles Leclerc led home an incredible one-two finish for the Maranello team in the first round of the 2022 Formula 1 season, the Bahrain Grand Prix. This result means that Ferrari has returned to the top of the Drivers’ and Constructors’ World Championship standings, even though just one event of the current championship has taken place.
For the media in Italy, where the expectation is now building, Ferrari’s success in Sakhir was of course received with great celebration as the flag flies high once again above Maranello: “After two years from the last time, from Singapore 2019, Ferrari returns to the top with full merit,” wrote La Gazzetta dello Sport – “Charles Leclerc with pole, fastest lap and victory, Sainz an excellent second, and here is the double that starts the year on the right foot.”
Among the positive notes regarding Ferrari’s 2022 Formula 1 car is the drivability simplicity, making it a car that manages to go fast as soon as it hits the track and responds easily to changes made by the engineers. And then there is the positive aspect related to the brakes, as explained by Italian daily newspaper Corriere dello Sport, in a recent article written by Fulvio Solms: “For Ferrari there was a huge and successful job with Brembo. Having to break a car 1/5 heavier than last year (a nonsense in a sport that aims to reduce costs), is a colossal challenge which is further complicated by the rule that has limited cooling systems. And we can see what happens with Ferrari’s rivals: Red Bull suffers, McLaren is on tilt. On circuits that are stricter for the brakes – such as Jeddah, Montreal, Singapore, Mexico, Abu Dhabi – the F1-75 could have a great advantage,” – Corriere dello Sport informs.
At the same time, the meticulous work carried out by the engineers with the drivers should be underlined. The most striking example was Charles Leclerc’s early braking in Turn 1 during the duel with Red Bull’s Max Verstappen, a move that allowed the Monegasque driver to get out of the corner faster, activate the DRS and regain his position on his way to a great win in the Bahrain Grand Prix.
