Scuderia Ferrari Monegasque driver Charles Leclerc admitted that part of the Maranello team’s resurgence in the 2022 Formula 1 season is rooted in a ‘mentality reset’ which was needed for Ferrari to be able to produce a front-running car and return to the top after a long time.
The two pre-season testing sessions in Barcelona and Bahrain showed Ferrari was on the right track and the most important confirmation came last weekend as the Italian side started the new Formula 1 campaign with an impressive one-two finish courtesy of Charles Leclerc and teammate Carlos Sainz, which was Ferrari’s first victory since the 2019 Singapore Grand Prix.
During the previous championship, which was marked a slight overall improvement, the Maranello team’s engineers spared no effort to design and develop a new-generation Formula 1 car and power unit capable of bringing the team back to the top of the field and fighting Mercedes and Red Bull for race wins.
However, that crucial work was supported by an equally important transformation under the leadership of Scuderia Ferrari Team Principal Mattia Binotto of the Italian outfit’s mindset, and both those effort have borne fruit: “It’s been a long time since we first started work on this car,” Charles Leclerc explained, as the Monegasque driver scored in Sakhir his third career victory in Formula 1 – “There’s been a massive amount of work and also quite a mentality reset. After 2019 we had two very difficult years and the team at the factory have been working extremely well, I think. We’ve also been very good at identifying the weaknesses of the previous cars and came with these new cars, a very strong car, and [that] made it possible for us to be fighting for better positions.” – the Ferrari driver concluded.
