Ferrari was one of the most pleasant surprises of the opening Formula 1 pre-season tests in Bahrain, and there is one particular aspect that gives real cause for optimism ahead of the 2026 campaign.
The fact that the Scuderia encountered no issues whatsoever during the Barcelona shakedown undoubtedly drew even greater attention to a Ferrari team that entered the new season under pressure to deliver clear answers. Those answers appear to have started arriving during the first three days of testing at the Bahrain International Circuit, where the SF-26 consistently showed promising pace and stability.
A test programme completed without setbacks, combined with the introduction of the first upgrades on the SF-26, has led even rival top teams to admit concern about the potential of the Prancing Horse. Such recognition is far from guaranteed in modern Formula 1 and will naturally need to be confirmed once the championship heads to Australia for the opening race of the year. However, the early signals from Bahrain suggest that Ferrari has laid solid foundations for a competitive season.
Ferrari in the spotlight after strong Bahrain test performance
Matteo Bobbi, a well-known analyst from Sky Sport F1 and a former racing driver, also shared his view on Ferrari’s competitiveness in a YouTube video published at the end of Day 3 in Sakhir. His assessment underlined just how different the situation looks compared to twelve months ago.
“I see a very strong Ferrari compared to twelve months ago, when significant weaknesses had already emerged in Bahrain. Alongside a car that was well born and works well, there is also great reliability, and that is an absolutely crucial factor. It seems to be delivering excellent feedback and, based on what we have seen so far, they are right there in the fight,” he said.
Matteo Bobbi also highlighted how meaningful it is that Ferrari is being openly discussed by its main rivals. “The fact that Ferrari is being mentioned by its competitors is important. For example, Red Bull is talking about Ferrari as a very, very quick car, both in qualifying trim and in race configuration. According to McLaren, the Scuderia is even ahead. So Ferrari is fully part of this battle. I truly believe the Scuderia is competitive. I don’t know if that will be enough to win races, to win the championship or to achieve something extraordinary. But they certainly look competitive to me. They have already implemented new elements on the car and introduced a new floor. It seems to me that they are following a really positive development path,” Matteo Bobbi added.
Beyond outright lap times, what stands out most is the overall package displayed by Ferrari during the Bahrain tests: consistency over long runs, encouraging qualifying simulations and, above all, strong reliability. In a championship where marginal gains often determine the final outcome, starting the season with a solid and dependable platform can make all the difference.
While it remains too early to draw definitive conclusions before the lights go out in Australia, Ferrari has undoubtedly positioned itself as one of the key protagonists heading into the 2026 Formula 1 season. The real verdict will come on race weekends, but after Bahrain, the Scuderia has every reason to believe it can fight at the front.
