Guanyu Zhou in journalist mode. The Chinese driver, who recently attended the launch of the new C44 and will compete in his third Formula 1 season this year, revealed that he had been informed about Lewis Hamilton’s move to Ferrari well before the rumor exploded on February 1st. This was made possible thanks to his ties with Marc Hynes, who has been managing Guanyu Zhou’s interests since 2021 and will represent Lewis Hamilton again from 2024.
Guanyu Zhou knew about Lewis Hamilton in Ferrari
“I know Marc (Hynes), who is Hamilton’s manager,” said Guanyu Zhou in an interview with RacingNews365. “I sent him a message before, so I knew he would sign; it was a matter of fact. I didn’t tell anyone, but I was really shocked by the news.” – he admitted.
A few days ago, it emerged that the seven-time world champion would end his working relationship with Penni Thow, CEO of Copper, who has managed the image of the British driver in recent years, even in projects unrelated to Formula 1, such as Mission 44. Lewis Hamilton has reconnected with Marc Hynes, a historic manager during his dominant years at Mercedes.
“I think the news will be even more shocking for the colleagues at Mercedes,” Guanyu Zhou adds. “I believe, as a driver, especially Lewis, you see yourself retiring as a Ferrari driver. It’s obviously very nice to have. I don’t blame him for having that kind of feeling.”
Despite approving the choice, Zhou finally stated that he was perplexed by the timing of the announcement: “It’s very unexpected. I didn’t expect Lewis to retire as a Ferrari driver. People love to retire as a Ferrari driver, especially World Champions, but he announced it at the beginning of this season, which is certainly a shock. It’s exciting for those, like us, who want to understand that many things are changing in other teams.” – he concluded.
