The behind-the-scenes story from Hamilton’s past that could have changed his F1 career forever
A surprising behind-the-scenes revelation has emerged from Formula 1’s recent past. Peter Sauber has disclosed a remarkable story involving Lewis Hamilton, explaining that nearly twenty years ago the British driver was very close to making his Formula 1 debut with the Sauber team.
At the time, Hamilton was under contract with McLaren, which was evaluating the possibility of placing him on an apprenticeship-style path away from the works team. “Practically nobody knows that about 20 years ago Lewis Hamilton was about to race for Sauber,” Peter Sauber explained, shedding light on a scenario that could have changed the history of modern Formula 1.
Hamilton could have raced for Sauber: the full story
The discussions were far from superficial. McLaren organized a formal meeting in Switzerland to explore the possibility in detail. “Lewis was part of McLaren and they wanted to send him to Hinwil for his apprenticeship,” Sauber recalled. “So the McLaren delegation met Lewis and his father Anthony, me, and our lawyer Monisha Kaltenborn at Kloten airport.”
All the foundations for an agreement were in place, and the talks were conducted in a professional and structured manner. However, despite the serious intent on both sides, the deal ultimately failed to materialize due to a clear disagreement over the terms of the loan. “In the end the deal fell through because McLaren wanted to loan him out for just one season,” Sauber explained. “We, on the other hand, were insisting on a two-year loan.”
The negotiations ended without a signature, and Lewis Hamilton remained firmly on the McLaren development path. That route would later lead him to his Formula 1 debut and, ultimately, to one of the most successful and iconic careers in the history of the sport. Looking back, that meeting at Kloten airport stands as one of the major crossroads in modern Formula 1 history.
Had the agreement gone through, Lewis Hamilton’s career trajectory could have taken a very different direction. The words of Peter Sauber add a new and fascinating piece to the early story of the seven-time world champion, offering insight into how close he came to starting his Formula 1 journey with a different team.
It is a little-known detail that highlights how, in Formula 1, destiny can hinge on decisions made far away from the racetrack, long before the lights go out on a Sunday afternoon.
As we look back on these sliding-door moments, it is clear that the rigid structures of driver academies often dictate the future of the sport. While Lewis Hamilton eventually found his way to greatness with McLaren and Mercedes, the vision of a young Lewis in Sauber colors remains one of the most intriguing alternate histories in the world of racing.
