After Max Verstappen’s win at Imola, F1 now heads to the most unpredictable stop on the calendar: the Monaco Grand Prix, where Ferrari is seeking a turning point in its season. The street circuit in the Principality could bring unexpected surprises, as Ralf Schumacher explained on the Backstage Boxengasse podcast.
Despite his recent win at the Emilia-Romagna GP, Max Verstappen is not leading the drivers’ championship — Oscar Piastri is, with a 22-point advantage. And Monaco, historically a tough venue for Red Bull, could once again become a pivotal moment in the season.
Red Bull and McLaren could struggle in Monaco, Ferrari may surprise
“The circuit is very bumpy, with high kerbs,” Ralf Schumacher explained. “Last year we saw Red Bull struggle. That could happen again. It will be a tough weekend for Max Verstappen. And maybe, there could even be a surprise.”
Despite McLaren’s current strong form, the former German driver warned of potential pitfalls in terms of strategy, especially in such a sensitive environment as Monaco.
“McLaren might be seen as a favourite, but when it comes to strategy, they often get in their own way,” said Ralf Schumacher. “And in a weekend like this one, strategy will be crucial — especially in qualifying. This is particularly true for Lando Norris.”
Ralf Schumacher then turned his attention to two outsiders who, in his view, could shine through the streets of Monaco. “Ferrari has good chances here. On a track like this, mechanical grip and the car’s ability to flow smoothly over the kerbs are a big advantage.” – the former Formula 1 driver pointed out.
But not just Ferrari: Williams is also among the possible protagonists of the weekend, particularly with Carlos Sainz and Alex Albon. “Williams is very competitive at the moment, and here in Monaco, if you manage a perfect lap and start at the front, you really have a good opportunity.”
