Charles Leclerc’s Silent Struggles in 2025 as Ferrari Grapples With a Costly Technical Issue
Charles Leclerc’s 2025 Formula 1 campaign has flown largely under the radar, as Ferrari continues to fall short of expectations and remains off the pace of the frontrunners. Despite having one of the sport’s most talented driver pairings, the Maranello team has failed to make a serious impression this season, with underwhelming results becoming the norm.
At the Canadian Grand Prix, Ferrari appeared to have a chance at a stronger finish, but a disjointed and error-filled weekend sabotaged their potential. A poor start to the weekend left the team on the back foot, and any realistic shot at fighting for victory slipped through their fingers.
Charles Leclerc currently occupies fifth in the drivers’ standings, sitting 32 points behind George Russell and holding a 25-point buffer over teammate Lewis Hamilton. The numbers reflect the broader issue at Ferrari — a car that consistently lacks the speed and consistency required to challenge for wins. At no point during the season so far has the Scuderia looked capable of winning a race, and there’s little evidence to suggest that is about to change.
To address their performance deficit, Ferrari are reportedly accelerating the development of a crucial aerodynamic upgrade. The goal is to inject some much-needed competitiveness into the SF-25 ahead of a critical stretch of the European season, where the team hopes to claw back ground in the constructors’ standings.
Behind the scenes, Charles Leclerc is said to be growing increasingly frustrated with what he perceives as a loss of belief within the team. According to reports from Italy, the Monegasque driver is “stunned” by the apparent resignation inside Ferrari, with many no longer convinced that either championship is realistically attainable in 2025. Whether the upcoming updates can shift that narrative remains to be seen.
Leclerc Battling a Major Ferrari Flaw That May Be Costing 15 Seconds per Race
In an effort to regain a competitive edge, Charles Leclerc has been actively participating in Pirelli tyre testing, aiming to gather crucial data ahead of the monumental 2026 regulation overhaul. The next era of Formula 1 is expected to bring sweeping changes, potentially upending the current competitive order. But before turning full attention to the future, Ferrari still have 14 races left to contest in 2025, along with valuable constructors’ championship points and prize money on the line.
One of the more troubling revelations comes from Italian media sources, which report that the Monegasque has been contending with an “extreme” floor plank issue on his car. The technical flaw has allegedly forced him to lift off the throttle in key parts of various circuits, costing him as much as 15 seconds per Grand Prix. The issue has severely compromised his ability to compete at the front, with analysts suggesting that, without the problem, Charles Leclerc could have been in contention for wins at several races.
Should Ferrari Shift Focus Entirely to 2026?
With no titles realistically in sight and ongoing development struggles, some voices within the paddock are questioning whether Ferrari should already write off the remainder of the 2025 Formula 1 season and focus entirely on preparing for 2026. Given that the driver line-up is secured and the technical foundation for the future is in place, there may be strategic merit in doing so.
However, Charles Leclerc’s concerns intensified following an analysis of Lewis Hamilton’s data during FP2 in Montreal, which indicated that Ferrari may have even been slower than Williams in certain conditions. While the team did manage to make progress throughout the weekend, such comparisons are hardly encouraging for a team of Ferrari’s stature.
As the Austrian Grand Prix approaches, Ferrari will aim to build on those improvements and deliver a more complete weekend. A stronger baseline performance in practice and qualifying could finally put them in a position to fight for their elusive first win of the season — a result that could temporarily ease internal tensions and offer their loyal fanbase a much-needed reason to celebrate.
