Formula 1 championship leader Max Verstappen edged his title rival Charles Leclerc to complete a clean sweep of the Friday practice sessions at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, ahead of the 2022 Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal. The Dutchman driver was just 0.081s quicker than Scuderia Ferrari Monegasque driver Charles Leclerc, as the Maranello team will decide overnight whether to take its inevitable power unit grid penalty this weekend in Canada. Carlos Sainz was third quickest, just over a couple of tenths adrift of his former team-mate Verstappen.
Indian racing driver and television presenter Karun Chandhok believes there are some important clues in Charles Leclerc’s runs during the first two free practice session on Friday that Scuderia Ferrari are indeed expecting to start from the back of the grid on Sunday after taking an engine penalty, by actually once again changing the power unit on Saturday, which would mean a new turbo and other new engine parts, to fill up the PU pool again with the goal of finishing the 2022 Formula 1 season without other penalties, as Charles would therfore have power units 3 and 4 available for the remaining races.
“It seems like Charles Leclerc’s done all of his running in this session on the soft tyre. That is another indication to me that they are trying to understand the best way to optimise the car for a long stint on that soft tyre if he’s going to start at the back.” – Karun Chandhok said for Sky Sport at the end of the second free practice session for the the 2022 Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal.
