Dr. Gongsak Yodmani, governor of the Sports Authority of Thailand (SAT), confirmed the signing of the memorandum of understanding with Formula 1, bringing the Asian nation closer to a possible entry into the top open-wheel racing category.
F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali visited Thailand earlier this month to meet with Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra and assess the feasibility of bringing F1 to the country, which is highly interested in hosting such a prestigious event to boost its international image.
Speaking about the visit, Domenicali said: “I was pleased to meet today with Paetongtarn Shinawatra, the Prime Minister of Thailand, and his team to discuss their impressive plans to host a race in Bangkok. I look forward to continuing our discussions in the weeks and months ahead.”
Now, Yodmani has announced that a memorandum of understanding has been reached and signed, and that the Chatuchak region has been identified as the potential venue for the Thailand Grand Prix. “The important thing is that we need to understand the community and the people in the area who will be affected by the race. We all agree that organizing an F1 event should benefit all stakeholders, especially local residents.”
“We need to let them know that we are committed to minimizing the impact on environmental and noise issues and ensuring that local people are informed and compensated.”
One driver particularly excited about the prospect of a Thailand Grand Prix is Alex Albon, who would be thrilled to have a race in his home country.
“I’m excited to hear the news of a possible Thailand Grand Prix. It would mean a lot to me if it happens, and it would be another home race not only for me but also for Williams. I’m very excited, it deserves to be added to the race calendar,” Albon commented during the Chinese Grand Prix weekend.

“Talking to the other Formula 1 drivers, I know that many of them have never been to Thailand. I would be really excited to show them Thailand’s culture, the people, the food. I want to be their tour guide for the weekend!”
“Maybe we could even visit some temples. I think it would be fantastic. I would love to see more Thai people involved in motorsport, and I want to help in any way I can.”
