A constantly evolving Formula 1, yet one that remains true to its roots. This is how Stefano Domenicali describes the current era of F1. The president and CEO of Formula 1 spoke at the Brand Connection event organized by Deloitte in Milan, providing an opportunity to assess the championship’s appeal and the numerous changes since he assumed his current role in 2021. Domenicali firmly believes that the path taken is essential to ensuring a prosperous future for the sport, a conviction he reaffirmed after his presentation.
Innovations across every dimension of F1
When asked about the most innovative aspects introduced since becoming president, Stefano Domenicali explained: “We have sought to innovate across every dimension we are involved in. From a sporting perspective, this has been seen with the introduction of the Sprint. The format has changed to generate more attention and to adopt a different approach compared to traditional on-track activity.”
Communication and connecting with fans
The evolution is also visible in communication. Stefano Domenicali noted: “The previous point applies to forms of communication, different products, and ways to engage with younger audiences. In this regard, we have been successful in interpreting trends that have allowed this sports platform to grow even larger than before.”
Balancing innovation with tradition
There is an ongoing “tension” between F1’s innovative approach and fans who value tradition. Stefano Domenicali remarked: “We have observed growth among fans. Evidently, it comes from the base of those who have followed us and have always been present. This is about delivering the right information in a different way. It means we remain attractive to those passionate about technological data. After all, the challenge unfolds on the track, and that is the most important aspect for us.”
Future challenges for F1
Regarding the most stimulating or challenging aspects ahead, Stefano Domenicali stated: “The challenge is to remain relevant across all dimensions. This will define our role in the coming years: for example, technologically, with sustainable fuel and new regulations. Another aspect concerns forms of entertainment, which must be increasingly complete to offer unique experiences to all fans, both on track and through today’s various communication channels.”
Memories with Ferrari
Reflecting on his time as Ferrari’s sporting director when the team won its last drivers’ championship with Kimi Räikkönen on 21 October 2007, Stefano Domenicali said: “Being part of an important family like Ferrari, the memories are always unique. It feels like yesterday, yet many years have passed. I hope these moments can return soon. Ferrari is a treasure and represents something special for Italians.”
